Deltec Homes, provider of prefabricated energy efficient homes has delivered their first net-zero home from Renew Collection.

Marie DeVerneil, a professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, first opened the company in 2012.

In 2013, they launched net-zero collection and subsequently she purchased a Deltec home. For DeVerneil, building a home with low environment impact was top priority.

A LEED architect, she and her family believes in living according to green concepts. She teaches a course in cultural sustainability at UMBC and is a member of the sustainability movement.

Located in Virginia, the home will feature passive solar design, solar panels with battery backup, a double stud wall and mineral wool insulation.

DeVerneil chose rectangular shape of the Ridgeline model, which is new territory for Deltec, who is specialized in round homes.

With plans to move in after retirement, DeVerneil loves Deltec’s round homes, but this model is very much appealing for her.

The Renew Collection has six models and they are planning to launch three more designs this year. Each home is designed to reduce energy consumption by two-thirds, on comparing to an average home. The remaining one-third is powered with renewable energy, which contributes annual energy use net-zero.

Several years of research and planning can be seen behind the Renew Collection and it is worth to see the launch and popularity gain, noted, Steve Linton, president, Deltec Homes.

Demands for energy efficient homes are high and the Renew Collection is the result of such an uprising demand. It can be considered as the future of homebuilding. Rules are getting stricter and people are becoming cautious of the environment and energy use, added Linton.

This is the first of nearly 20 homes from the Renew Collection scheduled to be delivered by mid-2015.
