Canada overlooking climate change, clean energy agenda

Canada has spent $6.5 billion on the renewable energy transition last year, reports a study from Clean Energy Canada.

Canada has been ignoring the climate issue and the clean energy revolution, according to research analysts.

Canada is not molding its renewable energy industries in accordance with the trend while major investors such as China, U.S., Japan and Germany are investing huge on wind and solar to reduce pollution and provide clean sources of energy, reports the release.

Most of the economies have approved clean-energy industries as a trade priority, but Canada still believes that only carbon-based fuels provide competitive advantage.

This swing has begun to penetrate into oil and gas sales of Canada. Investing in innovative renewable technologies always boost up the economy, suggests the report.

They asked Ottawa to start giving it the same kind of support it has given to every major industry in Canada, including the oil sands, which has received billions of dollars in federal support.

Dropping equipment costs, strong investor interest and good policy are motivating a global alteration to renewable energy sources.

The value is low compared to the $207 billion spent worldwide, including $55 billion in China alone. China’s imports of clean energy technology and services from Canada have tripled since 2001, to $63 million in 2011.

When China got into the field of clean energy and started investing in solar technologies, the cost of solar has gone down 83 per cent in the last five years, driving a revolution, explained research analysts.

In addition, the report demands the attention of leadership roles. U.S’s cleaner energy agenda and renewable targets are bringing about a slow shift in energy use and B.C.’s carbon tax has reduced fuel use by 16 per cent.

Since 2000, almost half the new electricity produced in Canada is wind and solar due to heavy investment by Ontario and Quebec. But micro- grids are facing barriers in Canada.

Besides, Canada proved inefficient in attending international forums that could advance its clean energy trade interests, Clean Energy Canada said.

Clean Energy Canada urged Ottawa to play a constructive role in the Paris 2015 climate talks. Canada was recognizes as a straggler in mnimizing greenhouse gas emissions at the Copenhagen climate talks in 2009.

The group said Canada should be able to show progress in cutting back on emissions that cause climate change before the Paris talks.
