The latest renewable energy news includes announcements from Madison Energy, Tesla-powered battery project in Belgium, AGL Energy, Liddell battery energy storage, and others.
Madison Energy Targets 1 GW of US Distributed Energy with Up to $2 Billion Investment
Madison Energy Infrastructure plans to develop an additional 1 GW of distributed energy capacity across the United States by 2028, backed by up to $2 billion of capital. The EQT-backed company is targeting rising electricity requirements from data centres and other large commercial users. Its development programme will include distributed solar, battery storage and associated energy infrastructure. The 1 GW expansion target covers new capacity beyond Madison Energy Infrastructure’s existing portfolio. Deployment is scheduled through 2028, giving the company roughly two years to execute the programme. The capital commitment provides a defined investment figure for building projects that can supply electricity close to customer loads rather than relying solely on utility-scale generation.
Belgium Starts Construction of 2.8 GWh Tesla-Powered Battery Project
Construction has started on a 2.8 GWh battery energy storage project in Belgium using Tesla storage technology. The construction milestone moves one of Europe’s largest announced battery projects into physical execution. At 2.8 GWh, the facility will be capable of storing large quantities of electricity for use during periods when renewable output is lower or system demand increases. The project will use Tesla battery equipment and provide flexibility to Belgium’s electricity network as additional wind and solar generation is connected. Grid-scale storage can participate in wholesale electricity markets and balancing services while absorbing surplus generation. The project’s scale places it substantially above most existing European battery installations, which typically have storage capacities measured in hundreds rather than thousands of megawatt-hours.
AGL Commissions 500 MW Liddell Battery at Former Australian Coal Site
AGL Energy has commissioned its 500 MW Liddell battery energy storage system in New South Wales, Australia. The battery has been developed at the site of AGL’s former Liddell coal-fired power station, converting existing electricity infrastructure into a grid-scale storage location. Commissioning means the project has moved from construction into operational status and can now support the National Electricity Market. The 500 MW output capacity enables the battery to respond rapidly to electricity-market conditions and grid requirements. Liddell is part of AGL’s programme to replace ageing thermal generation with renewable electricity, battery storage and other flexible capacity while reusing grid connections and infrastructure associated with its former coal-generation sites.
