Chile Approves First Phase of $11 Billion HNH Green Ammonia Project With 1.4 GW Wind Farm
Chile has granted environmental approval for the first phase of the $11 billion HNH Energy green ammonia project in Magallanes, representing a material regulatory advance for one of Latin America’s largest planned hydrogen developments. Phase 1 includes a 1.4 GW wind farm with 194 turbines, desalination, hydrogen and ammonia production, storage and export-port infrastructure. The complex targets around 270,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen and 1.3 million tonnes of green ammonia annually. A second phase would add another 2.1 GW of wind capacity. Developers include Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, AustriaEnergy and Ökowind. Construction is targeted from 2027, with ammonia production expected in the second half of 2030. The project could employ roughly 4,000 workers during construction and 1,800 during operation.
Calix Selects Perdaman as Hydrogen Partner for 30,000-Tonne Green Iron Demonstration Plant
Calix has selected Perdaman as hydrogen development partner for its ZESTY Green Iron Demonstration Project in Western Australia, moving the project closer to a final investment decision. Under a binding agreement, Perdaman receives a 12-month exclusivity period to complete engineering and design work for the hydrogen supply system and establish cost certainty. ZESTY is designed to produce up to 30,000 tonnes annually of hydrogen direct-reduced iron or hot-briquetted iron, using renewable electricity and hydrogen instead of conventional fossil-fuel reduction. The project has already secured an AUD 44.9 million ARENA grant, covering up to 50 percent of eligible project costs subject to conditions. Calix has completed more than 130 pilot test runs using nine Australian iron ores, demonstrating the technology across different ore grades.
AFRY Wins Engineering Contract for 191 MW Thana Plaun Hydropower Project in India
AFRY has been selected by Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation to support development of the 191 MW Thana Plaun run-of-river hydropower project on the Beas River in Mandi district, India. AFRY’s assignment covers detailed engineering and design, project management, construction supervision, procurement assistance and tender-stage engineering. Project delivery is expected in 2032. The contract gives the Swedish engineering group a central technical role across the development and construction cycle of a sizeable Himalayan hydroelectric facility. Run-of-river generation can provide renewable electricity with less reservoir storage than conventional large-dam projects while adding dispatchable generation to a system increasingly dominated by solar and wind additions. The 191 MW scheme also supports India’s wider strategy of expanding hydropower and flexible generation to improve grid balancing as variable renewable capacity grows.
European Energy Commissions 167 MW / 545 MWh of Battery Storage Across Three Countries European Energy has commissioned 167 MW / 545 MWh of battery energy storage during the first eight months of 2026, establishing storage as a substantial new asset class in its European renewable portfolio. Operational projects include Kvosted, Agersted, Stouby, Kragerup and Måde in Denmark, Anykščiai in Lithuania and Saldus in Latvia. The initial strategy has focused heavily on co-locating batteries with renewable-generation assets, allowing European Energy to shift production, capture additional revenue and reduce exposure to low or negative electricity prices. The company plans further BESS deployments across Denmark, Australia, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, the UK and Germany. Storage projects may be retained, combined into hybrid renewable assets or sold to infrastructure investors depending on individual market economics and project strategy.
