The latest renewable energy news includes announcements on Dominion Energy, RWE’s Sofia offshore wind farm, Taihan Cable, among others.
Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) – Cable Installation Underway
Dominion Energy has started subsea cable installation for its 2.6 GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project, the largest offshore wind project under construction in the U.S. The project involves 176 Siemens Gamesa turbines and three offshore substations, with first power expected in 2026. Contracts for cable supply and installation were awarded to Prysmian Group and DEME Offshore, deploying specialized vessels Leonardo da Vinci and Living Stone for export and array cables. The project’s strategy is to deliver large-scale offshore wind to meet Virginia’s clean energy targets and Dominion’s decarbonization goals. Technologies include 320kV high-voltage cables, advanced subsea trenching, and grid integration solutions. Customers include Virginia’s residential and industrial energy users. Innovations cover optimized cable routing and marine logistics. Benefits include 660,000 homes powered, carbon reduction, supply chain development, and enhanced energy security. Total investment exceeds $9.8 billion.
RWE Completes 100 Foundations for 1.4GW Sofia Offshore Wind Farm
RWE has successfully completed installation of all 100 monopile foundations for its 1.4 GW Sofia offshore wind project, located 195 km off the UK coast on the Dogger Bank. This milestone was delivered by Van Oord under contract, utilizing the Aeolus and Scylla installation vessels. The project will use Siemens Gamesa SG 14-222 DD turbines, with turbine installation scheduled to begin in 2025 and first power delivery targeted in 2026. The Sofia project aligns with RWE’s strategy to expand offshore wind capacity and contribute to the UK’s net zero targets. The technology focus includes large monopiles and optimized seabed engineering. Key customers will benefit from clean electricity for up to 1.2 million UK homes. The £3 billion investment supports jobs, supply chain growth, and energy security.
Taihan Installs Export Cables for 3.648GW South Korean Offshore Wind Project
Taihan Cable & Solution has completed installation of 230kV high-voltage export cables for South Korea’s 3.648 GW offshore wind power project, a major part of the country’s renewable energy expansion. The cables will transmit power from offshore wind turbines to the onshore grid, supporting South Korea’s carbon neutrality targets. The project is being developed in cooperation with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), under a contract covering cable manufacturing, transportation, and offshore installation. Specialized vessels and equipment ensured precision in subsea cable laying. This milestone strengthens Taihan’s position in the offshore energy sector. Technology focus includes durable high-capacity submarine cables for grid stability. Customers benefit from enhanced renewable energy integration. The project supports energy transition goals, creates local employment, and contributes to South Korea’s offshore wind ambitions.
