Malawi Commissions First Utility-Scale Standalone BESS
Malawi has commissioned its first standalone utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS), a 20-MW/40-MWh facility designed to strengthen the reliability and flexibility of the national electricity grid. The battery will help stabilise power supply by storing electricity and delivering it when required, while enabling the grid to accommodate approximately 100 MW of additional renewable energy generation capacity. The project represents an important milestone in Malawi’s clean-energy transition as the country works to expand renewable electricity while addressing grid constraints. With 2 hours of storage capacity, the BESS can provide essential balancing services and support more effective integration of variable renewable resources. The facility also demonstrates the growing role of large-scale battery storage in modernising electricity infrastructure across sub-Saharan Africa.
Sungrow Powers Nordics’ Largest Commissioned BESS in Sweden
Sungrow has supplied its PowerTitan 2.0 battery technology for the 70-MW/160-MWh Ånge BESS in Sweden, described as the largest commissioned battery energy storage project in the Nordic region. Developed by Delta Capacity, the facility has now entered commercial operation after just 15 months from procurement to completion. Located in Sweden’s SE2 bidding zone, the battery will support grid balancing, frequency regulation and energy arbitrage while providing rapid-response flexibility to the electricity system. The project is owned by a joint venture between WOOD & Company Renewables Sub-Fund and Delta Capacity, while Centrica Energy manages electricity trading for the facility. Sweden and Finland installed more than 1 GWh of new battery capacity in 2025, highlighting rapid storage growth across the Nordic market.
Highstar Launches Battery Cell Portfolio for AI Data Centres
Highstar has unveiled a full-chain battery cell portfolio for artificial intelligence data centres (AIDCs) at the 2026 GGII Energy Storage Industry Summit. The solution covers 3 critical power layers: grey-space UPS and high-voltage direct current systems, white-space battery backup units and grid-side energy storage. The portfolio is designed to address the increasing power density and load volatility created by AI computing, with a focus on rapid response, reliable backup, temperature management and longer lifecycle performance. Highstar’s approach provides specialised battery cells for infrastructure close to computing loads while extending energy management to grid-level storage. During the summit, the company also participated in the launch of the 2026 Global AIDC Power Supply Industry Development Blue Book. It was recognised as a Top Benchmark in AIDC Energy Storage.
