India boasts 5,293 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations along its national highways, with plans to establish an additional 5,833 stations out of a total of 7,432, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways announced on Wednesday.
In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, disclosed that a capital subsidy of Rs 800 crore has been allocated to three oil marketing companies to aid in the establishment of these 7,432 EV charging stations.
Currently, 4,729 out of the 5,293 EV charging stations were set up under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas at a cost of Rs 178 crore. Minister Gadkari also noted that the Ministry of Heavy Industries has set a target to establish 5,833 EV charging stations along highways, leveraging the efforts of the three oil marketing companies.
The government has not planned any power stations specifically for EV charging stations along national highways at this time.

Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) 2024:
The EMPS 2024, which aims to bolster green mobility and the development of the EV manufacturing ecosystem in the country, is set to conclude on July 31. This four-month scheme, starting from April 1, had an outlay of Rs 500 crore. The total payout under the demand incentive is capped at Rs 493.55 crore, supporting 3,72,215 vehicles. Incentives will be distributed on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Two-Wheeler Industry Growth:
The two-wheeler industry is projected to maintain a steady growth rate of 7 to 9 percent in FY25, driven by increased EV sales and supported by the EMPS 2024, according to CareEdge Ratings.
