Lima climate summit strikes acceptable deal

Lima, Dec 14 The annual UN global climate change talks concluded here Sunday in the Peruvian capital city after reaching an acceptable deal.

As the 20th Conference of Parties (COP20) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change ran into overtime for over 30 hours, the parties began coming to an agreement Saturday, Xinhua reported.

Climate ChangeThe unresolved issues would be addressed at the next session slated to be held in Paris December 2015.

In the last two weeks, negotiators from over 190 countries and organisations gathered in the city to negotiate on a new agreement addressing climate change, which was planned to be passed at the end of 2015 and come into force in 2020.

The conference began Dec 1.

France welcomes Lima accord

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius Sunday welcomed Lima accord on climate change which he said prepared the ground for Paris’s next year gathering to forge concrete measures aimed at slowing increases in global temperature, droughts, floods, storms, and sea-level rise.

“After intensive negotiations, Lima conference on climate change has concluded with an agreement that constitutes a basis for preparing Climate Paris 2015…It was essential to continue the momentum of recent announcements made by the European Union, the United States and China on reducing greenhouse gases,” Xinhua quoted Fabius as saying.

“The agreement, which still needs an important and difficult work, will provide practical solutions to fight against climate change, especially for the most vulnerable countries,” the French top diplomat added in a communique.

Negotiators from over 190 countries and organisations gathered in Peru capital in two weeks Sunday agreed that governments would submit national plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an informal deadline of March 31, 2015 to form the basis of a global accord scheduled for Paris summit by the end of next year.
