Sungrow Secures 10 MW/40 MWh Battery Storage Contract for Alperia Hydropower Facility in Italy
Chinese energy storage technology supplier Sungrow has secured a contract to supply and install a 10 MW/40 MWh battery energy storage system for Italian utility Alperia. The contract was announced in October and reported October 20. The four-hour battery will be installed at an existing hydropower facility in the Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol region of northern Italy, near the Swiss border. The project will integrate battery storage with renewable hydropower generation to improve operational flexibility and electricity dispatch. Sungrow is also expanding its Italian battery business through other projects, including a previously announced 240 MWh supply arrangement with BNZ and the acquisition of two battery developments totalling 177 MW. Contract value and commissioning dates were not disclosed.
Endurance Energy Demonstrates Subsea Geothermal Power Generation at Pacific Ocean Volcano
Seattle-based geothermal technology startup Endurance Energy has completed a three-week demonstration of subsea geothermal electricity generation at Axial Seamount, approximately 300 miles off Oregon’s coast. Announced October 19, the company drilled a 52-foot geothermal well at an ocean depth of approximately 5,000 feet and installed its Adélie experimental power system. The turbine achieved approximately 26,000 revolutions per minute while generating a peak net output of 16.5 kW. Net-positive electricity generation lasted 8.7 seconds, with median net output of around 2 kW. The demonstration used a nearby natural hydrothermal vent after the drilled well provided insufficient flow. Endurance plans further testing and is developing a 2 MW commercial geothermal system.
Holyvolt Raises $45 Million to Commercialise AI-Designed Nickel-Free and Cobalt-Free Battery Materials
Swedish battery technology company Holyvolt has raised $45 million in equity financing to expand its AI-powered battery materials discovery platform. The financing, announced October 15 and highlighted in renewable-energy coverage October 20, includes backing from Zone II Ventures, Course Corrected and angel investors. Holyvolt’s Discovery Engine combines automated laboratory testing with approximately 18 years of proprietary battery research data. Its technology platform has supported more than 225 projects for over 85 customers, testing more than 500,000 battery cells across 165 million cycles. Funding will advance commercialisation of disordered rock-salt cathode materials, designed to eliminate nickel and cobalt. The company is targeting initial commercial applications in 2027, including mobility and energy storage.
