Newlight Hydrogen-Hybrid System Cuts Ship Fuel Use 24% on 8,500-Nautical-Mile Voyage

Newlight has completed the first long-range commercial voyage using its hydrogen-hybrid maritime energy system, demonstrating significant fuel and emission savings aboard a 199-metre, 57,038-DWT Lomar Shipping bulk carrier. During an 8,500-nautical-mile, or 15,700-km, voyage from Singapore to Ghana, the technology reduced fuel consumption by 24 percent, carbon dioxide emissions by 28 percent and carbon monoxide emissions by 22 percent. Newlight combines hydrogen with AI-controlled combustion technology retrofitted to existing diesel engines. The company estimates similar vessels could save approximately $500,000 annually, delivering technology payback in less than 18 months. Newlight has already signed commercial agreements covering 12 vessels across multiple shipping companies, with wider fleet deployments planned during 2027.

Light Raises $46 Million to Expand Solar, Battery and EV-Linked Electricity Platform

Energy technology company Light has raised $46 million in Series A funding led by Matrix, joined by Activate Capital and existing investors Spark Capital, Mischief, Gigascale Capital, MCJ and BoxGroup. The financing takes total funding to approximately $60 million, while Light says its overall capital base exceeds $100 million including credit facilities. Its embedded-electricity platform reaches more than 30 percent of US residential solar sales, 500,000+ homeowners and over 1 million multifamily units. Partners include Palmetto, GoodLeap, Emporia, Public Grid and Lunar Energy. Light is expanding beyond Texas through PJM, initially targeting New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Illinois, while adding battery-backed electricity plans and EV charging subscriptions. Run-rate revenue increased 10-fold over 12 months, and employee numbers are expected to more than double.

Obama Foundation Backs Illinois Community Solar Projects With Up to 50% Customer Savings

Renewable developer Reactivate and the Obama Foundation have formed a multi-year community-solar partnership in Illinois, with the Foundation becoming an anchor subscriber to solar projects developed, owned and operated by Reactivate. The anchor arrangement is intended to improve project financing while reserving remaining solar capacity for low-to-moderate-income households and local businesses. Eligible subscribers could reduce electricity costs by up to 50 percent through Illinois Solar for All and related community-solar programmes. The Obama Presidential Center is targeting 100 percent renewable electricity, while the arrangement allows customers without suitable rooftops or upfront investment capital to participate in solar generation. Reactivate develops community solar, smaller utility-scale PV, battery storage and EV-charging assets, positioning the agreement as a model for combining commercial clean-energy procurement with community-level electricity savings.

Colusa Tribe Wins Federal Approval to Accelerate Renewable-Energy Projects in California The Colusa Indian Community in California has secured federal HEARTH Act approval for its tribal leasing ordinance, eliminating a major administrative hurdle for renewable-energy and infrastructure projects on Colusa Rancheria trust lands. The approval was issued on June 22, 2026, with publication in the Federal Register on June 26. Previously, individual leases could require federal reviews lasting months or years. Under the new framework, business, agricultural and energy-project leases can run for up to 25 years, with two additional 25-year renewal options, potentially providing developers with leases lasting 75 years. Tribally owned Colusa Indian Energy says it already has projects ready to move forward. The regulatory milestone gives the Tribe direct control over project timelines and could accelerate clean-energy investment, infrastructure and energy-sovereignty initiatives.
