In a move set to bolster the manufacturing sector and enhance the energy infrastructure in North Carolina, Governor Roy Cooper has announced a significant Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) for Siemens Energy.
The undisclosed amount of grant aims to support the expansion of Siemens Energy’s existing manufacturing facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, to facilitate the production of large power transformers.
The expansion project is projected to generate up to 475 direct operating jobs and 285 construction jobs in Charlotte, with an additional 84 jobs expected to be created in Raleigh.
“Manufacturing large power transformers in the United States will strengthen and expand our electrical grid to incorporate more renewable energy and meet growing energy demand,” stated Tim Holt, Member of the Executive Board of Siemens Energy. He expressed excitement about undertaking this endeavor in Charlotte, highlighting the dedication of the existing workforce to supporting the nation’s energy and national security objectives.
Siemens Energy has had a presence in Charlotte since 1969, with approximately 1,250 employees currently working at the location. The expansion project involves repurposing 53,800 square feet of existing floor space alongside the construction of an additional 86,100 square feet to accommodate the manufacturing of transformers.
As a global leader in large power transformer manufacturing, Siemens Energy plays a pivotal role in enabling the transmission of electricity over long distances and stabilizing electrical transmission across regions. The company’s extensive experience in this field underscores its commitment to enhancing existing grid infrastructure and facilitating the energy transition.
This expansion marks Siemens Energy’s first venture into power transformer manufacturing in the United States, further underscoring its dedication to improving the reliability and security of the U.S. power grid.
