The wind energy industry is entering a new employment cycle as larger turbines, offshore projects, manufacturing expansion and digital technologies increase demand for specialized workers.

Europe’s wind industry supports about 478,000 jobs in 2026, comprising 225,000 direct and 253,000 indirect positions, with manufacturing accounting for approximately 110,000 jobs. WindEurope expects employment to exceed 600,000 by 2030, highlighting the growing requirement for technicians, engineers, manufacturing workers and offshore specialists.

In the United States, wind turbine service technicians are among the fastest-growing occupations, with employment projected to increase 49.9 percent between 2024 and 2034, adding approximately 6,800 jobs. That compares with projected growth of only 3.1 percent across all US occupations, according to the BLS Wind Turbine Technician Outlook.

US Wind Technician Salary Reaches $62,580

Strong employment growth is being accompanied by competitive salaries for skilled wind technicians.

The median annual wage for US wind turbine service technicians was $62,580 in May 2024. The lowest-paid 10 percent earned less than $49,110, while the highest-paid 10 percent earned more than $88,090.

Compensation varies according to experience, location and technical specialization. Workers with expertise in electrical systems, high-voltage equipment, advanced troubleshooting and offshore operations can command higher salaries as projects become more technically demanding.

Europe Wind Industry Identifies 235 Job Profiles

Wind energy employment extends far beyond turbine technicians. Developers and manufacturers require electrical, mechanical and civil engineers, field engineers, commissioning specialists, grid-integration experts, construction managers, project managers and health and safety professionals.

European workforce research has identified 235 different job profiles across the wind-farm lifecycle, demonstrating the industry’s broad employment footprint.

Skills in grid connections, high-voltage systems, turbine controls, power electronics and structural engineering are becoming particularly important as turbine size and project complexity increase.

Europe Employs 110,000 People in Wind Manufacturing

Manufacturing remains a major source of wind employment, supporting approximately 110,000 jobs in Europe across turbine and component production.

Manufacturing investment also creates indirect employment across component suppliers, logistics, engineering services and equipment maintenance. Countries attracting factories for turbines, blades, generators and electrical equipment can therefore capture a larger share of the economic benefits from wind-energy expansion.

Operations and maintenance represent another important long-term employment opportunity. Unlike construction jobs concentrated around project development, O&M employment continues throughout the operating life of wind farms.

An aging installed base is also creating additional demand for component replacement, major maintenance, upgrades and repowering.

Offshore Wind Creates Demand for Specialized Workers

Offshore wind is creating a higher-skill employment segment covering marine construction, subsea systems, foundations, vessel operations, offshore electrical systems, turbine installation, commissioning and maintenance.

These positions require additional marine, safety and technical qualifications, potentially creating stronger compensation opportunities for experienced specialists.

However, offshore employment remains dependent on project pipelines, permitting, investment and supply-chain development.

AI and Digitalization Transform Wind Jobs

Digital technology is also changing the skills required across the wind industry.

Predictive maintenance can identify equipment problems before failures occur, while drones are increasingly used for blade and infrastructure inspections. Remote monitoring, data analytics and advanced turbine-control systems can improve performance while reducing some manual inspection requirements.

Rather than eliminating technicians and engineers, these technologies are creating demand for workers who combine field experience with digital skills, including remote diagnostics, predictive maintenance, data analytics, automation and turbine performance optimization.

Europe Wind Employment Could Reach 607,000

WindEurope’s workforce assessment projects European wind employment at approximately 607,000 jobs by 2030, compared with around 442,800 jobs in its 2025 baseline assessment.

The projected 2030 workforce comprises approximately 288,000 direct jobs and 319,000 indirect jobs. A separate 2026 workforce analysis puts current employment at about 478,000 and similarly forecasts more than 600,000 jobs by 2030.

The different current workforce estimates reflect different reporting periods and baselines, but both point toward substantial employment expansion through the end of the decade.

51% of Renewable Energy Professionals Report Pay Increase

Skills shortages could also support wage growth.

A 2026 Airswift workforce survey found that 51 percent of renewable-energy professionals surveyed received a pay increase, while 20 percent reported increases of 5 percent or more. The figures cover renewable energy broadly rather than wind alone.

WindEurope has identified potential shortages in critical occupations including blade technicians, field engineers and pre-assembly support technicians. A lack of qualified employees could become a practical constraint on project development even when financing, equipment and grid access are available.

Wind Energy Jobs Shift Toward Higher Technical Skills

The wind employment outlook remains strong through 2030, but the industry’s biggest challenge is increasingly the availability of workers with the right skills.

US wind turbine technician employment is projected to grow 49.9 percent between 2024 and 2034, adding about 6,800 positions, while median pay already stands at $62,580, with the highest 10 percent earning more than $88,090.

Europe supports approximately 478,000 wind jobs in 2026, including 110,000 manufacturing positions, and employment is expected to exceed 600,000 by 2030, with one forecast putting the workforce at approximately 607,000.

As AI, automation, larger turbines and offshore projects reshape the sector, the strongest employment opportunities are likely to shift toward electrical and high-voltage expertise, engineering, offshore operations, O&M, digital diagnostics, grid integration and project management. The industry’s ability to train and retain these specialized workers will become increasingly important to delivering future wind projects.
