Incheon, the bustling port city in South Korea, will host the APAC Wind Energy Summit scheduled for November 26-28, 2024.
The APAC Wind Energy Summit, organized by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), is the three-day wind energy conference and exhibition for the Asia Pacific region. Having debuted in August 2023 in Melbourne, Australia, the summit gathers industry leaders, policymakers, and institutions to address market challenges and collaboratively devise solutions for expediting wind energy development in APAC.
Underlining their commitment to the execution of the summit, GWEC, Incheon Tourism Organisation (ITO), and Korea Tourism Organisation (KTO) formalized their collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The signatories representing the entities were Stewart Mullin, COO of GWEC, Hyeon Baig, CEO of ITO, and Chang Wook Jung, Director of KTO.
Against the backdrop of global commitments made at COP28 in December 2023 to triple renewable capacity by 2030, the APAC Wind Energy Summit holds a pivotal role in translating this objective into tangible actions, especially in a region that harbors nearly half (49 percent) of the world’s 380 GW offshore wind potential. South Korea, bordered by three seas, has emerged as a key player in APAC for offshore wind, pledging to achieve a 21.6 percent share of renewables in its energy mix by 2030.
With a 2030 deployment target of 14.3 GW for ocean wind power, South Korea views offshore wind development as integral to attaining its 2050 net-zero goals. The coastal areas of Incheon, with their abundant wind resources, further enhance the city’s strategic position for large-scale offshore wind development, promising sustained economic growth and job creation for local communities.
The 2024 summit, supported by KTO and ITO, anticipates drawing over 3,500 international and local delegates to Incheon, fostering discussions on how the region can accelerate wind power growth. GWEC is actively engaging with local and international think tanks, energy associations, and climate action groups to foster collaborations aimed at delivering an outstanding summit.
Scheduled to take place from November 26-28 at Songdo ConvensiA, the APAC Wind Energy Summit 2024 invites businesses, government entities, and organizations interested in sponsoring, exhibiting, or attending to register their interests here.
Stewart Mullin, COO of GWEC, expressed excitement about partnering with KTO and ITO for the second APAC Wind Energy Summit, acknowledging South Korea’s substantial offshore wind energy potential as crucial to meeting regional net-zero goals.
Hyeon Baeg, CEO of ITO, envisions the summit as a catalyst for accelerating the wind industry’s growth in South Korea and the broader Asia-Pacific region. ITO pledges active administrative and financial support to ensure the event’s success on behalf of Incheon city.
Chang Wook Jung, Director of KTO, underscores the significance of renewable energy in the current climate crisis. KTO, having contributed to the growth of South Korea’s renewable energy industry, hopes the APAC Wind Energy Summit 2024 will be a milestone event shaping the future of renewable energy in APAC.
