Siemens grid-connected highest number of wind turbines in 2014 followed by GE, Vestas

According to a survey by MAKE Consulting, Siemens has got ahead of Vestas, achieving topmost position in global wind turbine market while considering the market share for newly grid connected machines through 2014, reports Reuters.

However, the report by this Danish renewable energy consultancy says that there is no much difference between the achievements between the top three companies.

The wind turbine units of Siemens, GE as well as Vestas had between 10.8 and 10.1 percent each of global market share, a proof for tough competition in the industry, says Reuters.

However, GE reached second position from its fifth in the previous year as the turbines, which were installed in 2013 began operation only in 2014.

Recently, Siemens has begun spreading their operating area to offshore wind characterized with larger engines, suitable for offshore power generation, says the news agency.

Last year, Siemens accounted for 76 percent of new global offshore capacity additions, with 88 percent in Europe.

However, these three firms had insignificant roles in China as local makers are dominant there. Beijing-based Goldwind, United Power and Ming Yang were the top three turbine makers there respectively, MAKE said.

In Canada, Siemens and General Electric dominated the wind market in 2014, jointly accounting for more than half of the 1.9GW of capacity added, according to the Canadian Wind Energy Association.

Canada installed 1,871MW of wind capacity across five provinces in 2014, breaking the record 1,599MW it installed in 2013.

CanWEA expects 1.5GW of new capacity to be added in 2015.

In US market, GE, Siemens and Vestas continued their domination of wind turbine installations dominating about 95 percent of 4.85 GW of new capacity, according to American Wind Energy Association (AWEA).

GE installed about 2.75GW capacity, followed by Siemens with about 1.241GW and Vestas with 584MW.

GE has been the market leader by acquiring Enron’s wind business in 2002. Its core product is the 1.6-1.85MW platform, which is the US industry’s big seller. It also offers a 2.5-2.85MW platform.
