Orsted pioneers lower-noise installation method for offshore wind foundations

Orsted has unveiled a groundbreaking lower-noise installation method for offshore wind foundations, promising to revolutionize the industry.

Orsted has successfully tested this innovative technology in Germany, significantly reducing noise levels during foundation installations, enhancing marine life protection and paving the way for next-generation monopile foundations.

Successful Testing at Gode Wind 3

The renewable energy company tested the new technology at Orsted’s Gode Wind 3 offshore wind farm in Germany. This method, involving a patented jetting technology, effectively lowers the resistance of the sandy seabed, allowing foundations to sink into place without traditional pile driving. This process reduces underwater noise by 34 decibels compared to conventional methods, bringing noise levels to just above ambient levels in the North Sea’s German Bight.

Advancing Offshore Wind Installation

“This new technology is a potential game changer for how we build offshore wind. It could be cheaper, faster, and far quieter – without additional mitigation – than any other monopile installation technology. It also has the potential to make next-generation foundations lighter as they won’t need to be designed for conventional installation processes,” Patrick Harnett, Orsted’s Chief Operating Officer, said.

Orsted’s innovative approach not only benefits marine environments but also offers a more efficient and cost-effective installation process. At Gode Wind 3, 11 MW wind turbines have already been installed using this method, with commercial operations expected to commence later this year.

Industry Milestone

The use of jetting technology to install full-size monopile foundations is a first in the industry, marking a significant milestone. Orsted collaborated with Jan De Nul Group and their installation vessel Les Alizes, along with contractor Aarsleff, to develop and implement this technology. Future plans include assessing the feasibility of this method in more complex ground conditions and obtaining regulatory approvals for broader implementation.

Commitment to Innovation

Orsted’s new technology underscores the company’s commitment to innovation, a core aspect of its business strategy. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, Orsted aims to make green energy more affordable, reliable, efficient, and sustainable. The company is also exploring autonomous vessels for offshore surveying and large drones for cargo transport to wind turbines.

Orsted’s in-house R&D team, supported by over 50 universities and research institutes, oversees more than 300 projects, ensuring the best ideas transition from the lab to the field. The successful implementation at Gode Wind 3 will receive subsidies from the German Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) under the Offshore Wind Energy Act, promoting further innovation in offshore wind development.
