OnPath Energy is accelerating its renewable energy expansion strategy in the UK with plans to invest around £1 billion across Southern Scotland over the next five years through a partnership with Wilson Forest Products to develop three new onshore wind farms in South Lanarkshire.
The renewable energy developer has signed an option agreement covering the Bankend Rig II, Bankend Rig III, and Hawkwood Wind Farm projects. Under the agreement, OnPath Energy will have the right to acquire a majority stake in the three projects, subject to achieving specific project milestones and conditions.
The three proposed wind farms will include a total of 18 wind turbines with a combined generation capacity of 121 MW. The projects are expected to generate enough clean electricity annually to supply approximately 150,000 homes, strengthening Scotland’s renewable energy infrastructure and supporting the UK’s energy transition goals.
Planning approval for the Bankend Rig II and Bankend Rig III wind farms was secured by Wilson Forest Products in 2025. The Hawkwood Wind Farm proposal has also received approval from South Lanarkshire Council, pending the completion of final legal agreements.
The wind farm developments are located southwest of OnPath Energy’s existing Kype Muir Wind Farm in South Lanarkshire. The two companies have previously collaborated on the nearby Mill Rig Wind Farm project, which sits adjacent to the Hawkwood site and is expected to become fully operational later this year.
According to Richard Dunkley, the company is investing heavily in high-quality renewable energy infrastructure while expanding both geographically and technologically. He said the £1 billion investment programme in Southern Scotland forms a central part of OnPath Energy’s ambition to become the UK’s leading renewable energy developer.
Shaun Chande said the agreement marks an important milestone for the company following the sale of seven operational wind farms earlier this year. He added that capital generated through asset rotation strategies, including acquisitions and disposals, will be reinvested into new onshore wind development projects across the UK.
OnPath Energy is also expanding beyond Scotland with ongoing exploration of renewable energy development opportunities in England and Wales. The company recently acquired the Pates Hill Wind Farm in West Lothian and the Milton Keynes Wind Farm in Buckinghamshire as part of its broader UK growth strategy.
OnPath Energy is owned by Brookfield Asset Management, one of the world’s largest transition-focused investment firms, which manages more than 46,000 MW of operating renewable energy capacity globally. The backing from Brookfield is expected to support OnPath’s long-term expansion in onshore wind and other renewable energy technologies across Great Britain.
