RWE has announced significant leadership transitions across its renewables business, marking an important shift as the company accelerates its clean energy growth in Europe and Australia.
Katja Wunschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe and Australia, will leave the company on 31 March 2026 to join the Management Board of Vonovia as Chief Development Officer. Katja Wunschel has played a major role in advancing RWE’s onshore wind, solar, and battery storage expansion across several major markets.
Sopna Sury will take over as the new CEO of RWE Renewables Europe and Australia on 1 April 2026. The subsidiary oversees the development, construction, and operation of onshore wind assets, solar projects, and battery storage facilities across Europe and Australia.
Sopna Sury currently leads the hydrogen business at RWE Generation as a member of its Executive Board. With her move, Nikolaus Valerius, CEO of RWE Generation, will assume additional responsibility for hydrogen alongside his present role.
RWE CEO Markus Krebber highlighted the strength of internal leadership, noting that Sury brings deep experience in renewables and strategy. He expressed confidence in her ability to drive the company’s ongoing growth in wind, solar, and storage projects. Sopna Sury has held senior roles within RWE, Uniper, and E.ON, and has been central to building RWE’s hydrogen strategy since 2021. Her appointment underscores RWE’s intention to accelerate its energy transition roadmap through strong internal leadership and continued investment in clean power technologies.
