India’s installed wind power capacity reached 57,443 MW as of June 30, 2026, while electricity generation increased to 106 billion units during FY 2025-26.
Shripad Yesso Naik, Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, said India has ranked fourth globally in cumulative wind energy installations as of December 31, 2025, according to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) Report 2026.
The country added 6,057 MW of new wind power capacity during FY 2025-26, significantly higher than 4,151 MW in FY 2024-25 and 3,253 MW in FY 2023-24. Wind power generation also rose sharply to 106 billion units in FY 2025-26, compared with 83 billion units in both FY 2024-25 and FY 2023-24, reflecting stronger capacity additions and improved renewable energy output.
Gujarat remained India’s largest wind power state with an installed capacity of 16,086 MW, followed by Tamil Nadu (12,273 MW), Karnataka (8,896 MW), Maharashtra (6,318 MW), Rajasthan (5,516 MW), Andhra Pradesh (4,461 MW), Madhya Pradesh (3,686 MW), Telangana (128 MW), Kerala (71 MW) and other states (4 MW), taking the national total to 57,443 MW.
In terms of electricity generation during FY 2025-26, Gujarat led with 33,706 million units, followed by Tamil Nadu (24,200 million units), Karnataka (18,804 million units), Andhra Pradesh (8,902 million units), Maharashtra (8,610 million units), Rajasthan (7,345 million units), Madhya Pradesh (4,706 million units), Telangana (292 million units) and Kerala (130 million units). Total wind power generation reached 106,699 million units, equivalent to about 106 billion units.
Major wind companies
Suzlon Energy is India’s largest wind turbine manufacturer and one of the biggest beneficiaries of the country’s accelerating wind installations. The company delivered 2,456 MW of wind capacity during FY 2025-26, supported by a strong order pipeline.
Inox Wind has strengthened its position through large utility-scale projects. In July 2026, the company secured a Rs 1,600 crore repeat order from NLC India for a 200 MW turnkey wind project.
Adani Green Energy is expanding its wind and hybrid renewable portfolio as part of its target to build 50 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. The company is developing large integrated renewable energy projects, including wind installations within the Khavda renewable energy park in Gujarat, one of the world’s largest clean energy developments.
ReNew Energy Global (ReNew Power) invests in utility-scale wind, solar, and hybrid projects across multiple states. The company is focusing on round-the-clock renewable energy projects that combine wind, solar, and battery storage.
JSW Neo Energy’s acquisition of 4,696 MW of renewable assets from O2 Power has strengthened its wind and hybrid portfolio, supporting its strategy to become a leading renewable energy producer.
NTPC Green Energy is increasing investments in utility-scale wind, solar, and hybrid renewable projects through competitive government auctions. The company is also investing in transmission infrastructure and energy storage.
Sembcorp Green Infra has built one of India’s largest renewable energy portfolios, with more than 7.6 GW of wind and solar capacity in operation and under construction.
Policy measures
To accelerate renewable energy deployment, the Government has introduced a series of policy measures to strengthen the wind and renewable energy sector.
Transmission infrastructure is being expanded through the Green Energy Corridor Scheme, while a comprehensive transmission plan has been prepared through 2030 to support the rapid growth of renewable energy capacity.
The Government has permitted 100 percent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) under the automatic route to encourage greater private and international investment in renewable energy projects.
The Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO) trajectory has been notified until 2029-30 to increase renewable energy consumption across designated consumers.
To promote offshore wind development, the Government has launched the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme and notified the Offshore Wind Energy Lease Rules, 2023.
The National Repowering and Life Extension Policy for Wind Power Projects, 2023 has been introduced to improve the performance and lifespan of existing wind projects.
Revised guidelines for the installation of prototype wind turbine models were issued on June 12, 2025, while the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) mechanism has been implemented for wind turbines and their components.
The Government has enabled net metering up to 500 kW or the sanctioned electrical load, whichever is lower, to encourage distributed renewable energy generation.
The Green Energy Open Access Rules, 2022 allow consumers with a contract demand of 100 kW or above to access renewable energy through open access.
Renewable electricity trading has also been promoted through the Green Term Ahead Market (GTAM).
Together, these initiatives are designed to strengthen grid infrastructure, attract investment, expand renewable energy capacity, and support India’s long-term clean energy transition.
