Amazon has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with RWE, a global leader in renewable energy, for 110 megawatts from RWE’s Nordseecluster B offshore wind project in Germany. The renewable energy agreement supports Amazon’s commitment to carbon-free energy while contributing to the decarbonisation of Germany’s electricity system.
The new PPA builds on the Strategic Framework Agreement signed by Amazon and RWE in June 2025. Under that framework, RWE supports Amazon’s carbon-free energy ambitions, while Amazon Web Services provides cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and data analytics capabilities to support RWE’s digital transformation initiatives.
The 110 MW capacity from Nordseecluster B is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to power the equivalent of more than 139,000 German households each year, underscoring the role of offshore wind in meeting large-scale corporate and national climate targets.
Nordseecluster offshore wind project details
The Nordseecluster offshore wind farm is located in the German North Sea, approximately 50 kilometres north of the island of Juist. The project is being developed in two phases. Nordseecluster A, with a total capacity of 660 MW, is currently under construction and is scheduled to be commissioned in early 2027. Nordseecluster B will add a further 900 MW, with commercial operations expected to begin in 2029.
The wind farm is a joint venture between RWE, which holds a 51 percent stake, and Norges Bank Investment Management, which owns the remaining 49 percent. Support from offtakers such as Amazon is critical in enabling large-scale offshore wind investments and accelerating the transition to a low-carbon power system in Germany.
Ulf Kerstin, Chief Commercial Officer at RWE Supply and Trading, said Power Purchase Agreements play a vital role in expanding renewable energy capacity. He noted that agreements like the one with Amazon help accelerate Germany’s decarbonisation while strengthening long-term security of supply by bringing reliable, carbon-free electricity to the grid.
Supporting Amazon’s net-zero carbon ambition
The agreement directly supports Amazon’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon across its operations by 2040. In Germany, Amazon already operates six onsite solar projects and continues to expand its renewable energy footprint across the country.
The RWE deal represents Amazon’s fourth large-scale offshore wind PPA in Germany. Together with its existing renewable projects, Amazon now has 10 renewable energy initiatives in the country with a combined capacity exceeding 790 MW. Once fully operational, these projects are expected to generate enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of more than 1,000,000 German homes annually.
Rocco Bräuniger, Country Manager of Amazon in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, said the partnership supports Germany’s transition toward a modern, carbon-free energy system while helping Amazon make progress toward its long-term climate goals.
Expanding the global Amazon–RWE partnership
Globally, Amazon has contracted more than 1 gigawatt of renewable energy capacity across multiple RWE projects. The Nordseecluster PPA marks the first collaboration between Amazon and RWE outside the United States, signalling a new phase in their strategic relationship and highlighting the growing role of corporate PPAs in driving renewable energy deployment worldwide.
