Trinasolar, a global leader in photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage solutions, has partnered with Kiwi Solar and Trilect to launch Waikato’s first-ever agrivoltaics project. This initiative marks Trinasolar’s third venture into dual-use solar and agricultural farming in New Zealand.

The project spans 6.5 hectares and features 5,740 of Trinasolar’s Vertex N 720W modules (NEG21C.20). These modules boast over 700W of power and 22.5 percent efficiency, making it a high-performance solution. The solar farm is expected to generate around 6,000 MWh of clean energy annually, powering approximately 800 homes in the local community.

In addition to energy generation, the project allows for continued agricultural activities beneath the solar panels, with sheep grazing benefiting from the land. This dual-purpose land use maximizes land value and provides rural communities with added revenue streams.

Edison Zhou, Head of Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands at Trinasolar Asia Pacific, emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, noting the project’s focus on reliability and performance.

Andrew Beckett, Founder of Kiwi Solar, underscored the transformative nature of combining solar power with agriculture, enhancing land use, and contributing to New Zealand’s clean energy goals.

With only 500 MW of solar capacity currently installed in New Zealand, this project highlights the potential for growth in the country’s renewable energy sector as it works toward a 100 percent renewable energy future.
