Transphorm with Tata Power introduce efficient solar inverter

Transphorm has announced that it is partnering with Tata Power Solar, to introduce solar inverter that uses their patented EZ-GaNTM technology.

This collaboration will enhance Tata Power Solar’s position as a prominent solar solutions and technology provider.

The new inverters are based on Transphorm’s unique GaN-based power switching platform.

Transphorm is known as the first and only qualified 600V GaN device platform with its TPH Series portfolio of GaN products, supported by GaN power IP portfolio.

Currently used in LEDs, GaN technology is considered as the next generation in power electronics.

The GaN transistor combines low switching and conduction losses, offering reduced energy loss of more than 50 percent compared to conventional designs.

Under the partnership, Transphorm will supply GaN transistors and Tata Power Solar will manufacture and market the GaN-powered solar inverters. The first PV Inverter product will be released in 2015.

The target of the company is to lead in green energy. The inverter technology being developed has extensive applications in addition to solar conversion and these energy efficient applications will find applications in various Tata companies, stated, Ajay Goel, CEO, Tata Power Solar.

The designing of solar inverter using EZ-GaNTM platform will deliver the Indian energy sector with an efficient PV Inverter as well as a roadmap of performance and smaller form factor solar PV power, said, Arul Shanmugasundram, EVP, projects, CTO, Tata Power Solar.

Officials anticipate that these product families will fast-track India’s adoption of solar energy, enabling the goal of using renewables to power 20 percent of India’s energy needs by 2020.

The partnership of Tata with Transphorm is a testament to continued justification of the acknowledged leadership in addressing global power conversion needs, said, Umesh Mishra, chairman, Transphorm.
