Public sector utilities in India get government support to go solar

India is encouraging government owned power utilities to adopt solar energy and reduce the dependence on coal.

The Ministry has provided financial assistance to Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL).

BPCL is offered more than Rs 12,678,000 in assistance for its Mumbai -Manmad –BrijwasanPipline. Total capacity of the project is 215 kW.

IOCL is offered Rs 5,550,000 for its 75kW project in NOIDA and Rs 1,070,000 for an R&D center in Faridabad, Haryana.

In a statement given at the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Power, Coal & New and Renewable Energy, Piyush Goyal also said the companies that the “Promotion of Renewable Sources of Energy” is included in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) portfolio of these companies.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is offering 30 percent capital subsidy which ranges from Rs.27/-per watt peak to Rs.63/- per watt peak to solar power plants. The subsidy varies depends on the configuration and capacity of the plants, government sources said.
