Peterborough council consents £7 m rooftop solar energy projects

Contracts worth approximately £7 million will be given to two companies for roof top solar panel installation and operation in Peterborough, reports The Telegraph.

Peterborough City Council leader Councillor Marco Cereste has approved three contracts for solar panels to be placed on top of about 45 buildings.

Two of the contracts are to be awarded to Mears and the other to Honeywell Building Solutions.

The total cost of the works is estimated at £7,025,899 and the energy from the panels will generate an income of more than £9 million over 20 years.

The contracts include solar panels on the roofs of three corporate buildings in Alfric Square, Saville Road and at Westcombe Industries in addition to various schools.

Recently, the council met with difficulties on a bid for £1.5 million payment with a solar panel scheme on the roof of the former Freemans factory, which was referred to arbitration.

Eventually, councillors decided to scrap plans for hundreds of solar panels on farmland at Newborough and Thorney.

That decision prompted Cllr Cereste to put more solar panels on buildings in the city.

The council has a £22 million hole in its budget. Other ways of generating income have to be found, commented, Cereste.
