India PM Surya Ghar scheme has driven a 50 percent surge in rooftop solar capacity in just six months, adding around 1.8 gigawatts (GW) with 4 lakh residential installations.
Approved with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, the program aims to empower households to generate their own electricity and reduce dependence on grid power.
The government raised the subsidy on solar modules from 40 percent to 60 percent and is offering loans to households at a low 7 percent interest rate.
As of March, India’s total residential rooftop solar capacity was 3.2 GW (27 percent of total installed units), while commercial and industrial segments dominate with about 60 percent of the market.
The scheme aims to achieve 30 GW in residential solar capacity by 2027, aligning with India’s broader renewable energy and net-zero targets.
The program is expected to transform India’s solar landscape, with widespread benefits for residential energy independence and environmental goals.
