Borussia Dortmund and RWE have reached a major sustainability milestone with the completion of a next-generation photovoltaic system at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK.

The installation, developed under the sustainability partnership between the football club and the energy company, is now officially recognized as the most powerful solar power system ever mounted on a stadium roof.

The system features 11,132 solar modules and delivers more than 5 megawatts peak output. With this capacity, Germany’s largest stadium will now be able to cover up to half of its total electricity needs using solar power. The German Record Institute has officially confirmed the achievement. The shift to renewable energy at the stadium is expected to save around 1,700 tonnes of CO2 annually compared to previous power sources.

RWE and BVB are also preparing the next phase of the project. By early 2026, a battery storage installation with a capacity of 3.7 megawatt hours will be added. Once connected to the new solar system, it will enable the club to use clean electricity even when sunlight is not available. This supports continuous climate-friendly operations throughout the year.

The new system complements earlier work completed in April 2024 when around 200 solar modules were installed on the roof of the BVB Fan World building. The long-term partnership between RWE and Borussia Dortmund, signed in summer 2024 for six years, positions RWE as a premium and sustainability partner supporting the club’s decarbonization goals.

RWE CEO Markus Krebber highlighted the significance of the achievement, stating that the project represents a strong commitment to efficient climate protection through the combined efforts of two sustainability-focused teams.

BVB’s leadership echoed this sentiment. Hans-Joachim Watzke, Chairman of the Management Board, said that SIGNAL IDUNA PARK stands as a symbol of the club’s long-term strategy for sustainability and innovation. Managing Director Carsten Cramer emphasized that the project marks a key milestone, delivering both regional benefits and global visibility while reinforcing the club’s decarbonization strategy and long-term responsibility commitments.
