Africa Renewable Energy Market Accelerates as Egypt Deploys 1,000 MW Solar Project, South Africa Adds 890 MW Capacity and Zambia Plans 312 MW Expansion

Africa’s renewable energy transition is gathering pace as governments, utilities, and private developers invest in utility-scale solar power, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and cross-border clean energy partnerships. New projects across Egypt, South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, and broader Africa are expanding electricity generation, improving grid reliability, reducing fossil fuel dependence, and supporting long-term decarbonization and energy security.

Egypt has reached a major milestone by commissioning a 600 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and a 500-kV substation at AMEA Power’s 1,000 MW solar photovoltaic project in Benban. The project has already begun supplying electricity to the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company through phased grid integration. Once fully operational, it will become Africa’s largest combined solar and battery storage facility, significantly improving grid stability, enabling greater renewable energy integration, and reducing dependence on conventional power generation.

Renewable energy cooperation between China and African countries is also expanding through increased investments, technology transfer, and infrastructure development. The partnership covers solar, wind, hydropower, electricity transmission, and other clean energy technologies that improve electricity access and strengthen energy security across the continent. Chinese companies continue to finance and construct renewable energy projects that support industrial development, create employment opportunities, and accelerate Africa’s transition toward affordable and low-carbon electricity.

Namibia is strengthening its renewable energy strategy through deeper collaboration with China, focusing on expanding investments in solar power, wind energy, green hydrogen, and electricity transmission infrastructure. The partnership is expected to attract additional financing, accelerate technology transfer, strengthen local technical expertise, reduce dependence on imported electricity, improve energy security, and support the country’s long-term decarbonization and economic diversification goals.

Namibia’s renewable energy sector is also benefiting from growing private investment. Renewable energy producer Anirep reported that it tripled its solar electricity generation during the 2026 financial year, reflecting continued investment in solar infrastructure and improved operational performance. Higher renewable generation is helping reduce electricity imports, strengthen domestic energy security, lower carbon emissions, and advance Namibia’s clean energy transition.

South Africa continues to expand utility-scale renewable energy with the commissioning of a 216 MW solar photovoltaic plant integrated with a 500 MWh battery energy storage system by TotalEnergies and its partners. The hybrid facility combines large-scale solar generation with advanced battery storage to improve grid stability during peak demand, increase renewable energy integration, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthen long-term electricity reliability.

South Africa has also accelerated renewable capacity approvals. The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has approved 890 MW of new solar power projects, supporting greater private sector investment, increasing electricity generation capacity, improving grid resilience, reducing reliance on fossil fuel-based electricity, and advancing national decarbonization objectives.

Zambia has unveiled one of Africa’s most ambitious distributed solar programs by announcing plans to build 156 solar power plants, each with a capacity of 2 MW, creating a combined renewable energy capacity of 312 MW. The nationwide initiative is designed to expand electricity access in rural and underserved communities, reduce dependence on hydropower during drought periods, improve grid resilience through decentralized generation, strengthen national energy security, attract renewable energy investment, and support sustainable economic development.

These investments demonstrate Africa’s accelerating clean energy transformation, with large-scale solar generation, battery storage, decentralized renewable power, and international partnerships becoming central to the continent’s strategy for improving electricity access, enhancing grid resilience, reducing carbon emissions, and building a more sustainable and secure energy future.
