RWE Gas Storage West is constructing Germany’s first commercial hydrogen storage facility at Gronau-Epe, set for completion by the end of 2026, with commercial operations starting on July 1, 2027.
Approximately 70 percent of the planned storage capacity has already been marketed, while marketing for the remaining 30 percent will begin in the first half of 2025 for availability from 2028.
A market survey will run from February 24 to March 28, 2025, allowing participants to express their storage needs and booking interests.
The hydrogen cavern storage facility will hold up to 38 million cubic meters (about 135 GWh), enabling the buffering of fluctuating hydrogen production from renewable sources and ensuring availability for industrial customers.
RWE Gas Storage West currently operates and markets five underground natural gas storage facilities with a working gas volume of around 1.7 billion cubic meters, playing a crucial role in energy security and the transition to a sustainable energy system.
