RWE, the UK’s largest power generator, has signed a 10-year corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) with five independent retail co-operatives — Lincolnshire Co-op, Scotmid Co-op, East of England Co-op, Southern Co-op, and Central Co-op — to supply renewable electricity to over 400 locations across the UK.
Starting April 1, 2025, the contract will provide up to 53 GWh of green electricity annually, powering retail stores, funeral homes, and travel agencies. The electricity will be sourced from the London Array offshore wind farm in the outer Thames Estuary, operated by RWE. The farm has 175 turbines and a 630 MW capacity, previously the world’s largest offshore wind farm until 2018.
This agreement marks a major step in the co-operatives’ sustainability efforts, helping reduce their carbon footprint while reinforcing ethical business practices. Negotiated with Inspired PLC and legally facilitated by Shoosmiths LLP, the deal was completed in just three months, showcasing the efficiency of the collaboration.
