The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has confirmed that RWE’s climate targets align with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5-degree goal, validating its commitment to net-zero emissions by 2040. This marks the second validation of RWE’s climate targets by SBTi, following the initial recognition in 2020.
RWE’s targets cover Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions across its entire value chain, including direct emissions from electricity generation, indirect emissions from energy consumption, and emissions associated with upstream and downstream activities.
By 2030, RWE aims to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions, as well as Scope 1 and 3 emissions from electricity sold, by 71.1 percent per MWh compared to 2022. Absolute Scope 3 emissions will also be reduced by 42 percent within the same period.
By 2040, RWE plans to achieve a 98.3 percent reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions per MWh and in Scope 1 and 3 emissions from electricity sold, relative to 2022. Remaining absolute Scope 3 emissions will be cut by 90 percent, with residual emissions neutralized through carbon credits to achieve net-zero across the value chain.
The SBTi, an international climate action organization supported by key global institutions, recognizes RWE’s efforts as advancing toward a sustainable energy future.
