Lhyfe, a global leader in green and renewable hydrogen production, has received a significant boost from the French government in the form of a grant totaling up to €149 million. The financial support will aid in the construction of a green hydrogen production facility with an electrolysis capacity of 100 MW near Le Havre, a port city in northern France.
The confirmation of this grant comes as Roland Lescure, the French Delegate Minister for Industry and Energy, visited Le Havre for the 7th “Rencontres de l’Axe Seine” today. The government’s backing underscores its commitment to promoting sustainable energy initiatives and supporting innovative projects that contribute to reducing carbon emissions.
Led by Lhyfe for over two years, the project has also gained approval from the European Commission as part of the third wave of IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest) on hydrogen. This recognition further validates Lhyfe’s position as a key player in the renewable hydrogen industry and underscores the confidence in the expertise of its teams.
The proposed production site, situated near the Grand Canal du Havre, aims to produce up to 34 tonnes of green hydrogen per day. This aligns with the broader decarbonization objectives of the region, particularly in the industrial sector. The proximity to the Yara plant in Le Havre, which is committed to decarbonization and exploring green hydrogen usage, presents opportunities for collaboration and synergies between the two projects.
Matthieu Guesne, Founder and CEO of Lhyfe, expressed gratitude for the government’s support and emphasized the significance of the project in advancing France’s decarbonization goals. He highlighted the plant’s capacity to address the region’s substantial demand for clean energy while employing mature and environmentally appropriate technologies.
The planned site, spanning a 2.8-hectare area in Gonfreville-l’Orcher, is expected to become operational by 2028, subject to regulatory approvals and final investment decisions by Lhyfe and its partners. Selected under the IPCEI hydrogen program, this project signifies a strategic investment in sustainable energy solutions with broader implications for the European Union’s energy transition efforts.
