Renewable energy storage specialist Apatura has solidified its position as a major force in the UK’s energy transition through a series of notable achievements and planning consents across Scotland.

Apatura has now secured planning permission for 11 Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in just two years, representing a combined storage capacity of over 2.1GW. These developments contribute significantly to enhancing the flexibility and resilience of the UK’s electricity grid.

The most recent approval is for a grid-scale 560MW / 1120MWh BESS near Clydebank in West Dunbartonshire, located strategically between major substations at Windyhill and Drumchapel. This Whitehall project will help address peak demand challenges, support energy price stability, and bolster the UK’s clean energy goals.

Earlier in 2025, Apatura secured planning approvals for two additional projects:

100MW / 200MWh BESS at Killwinning in North Ayrshire (May 2025)

Apatura has secured planning permission for a 100MW battery energy storage system (BESS) near Kilwinning in North Ayrshire, marking its tenth approved project in 17 months and expanding its total consented BESS portfolio to over 1.6GW. The project, located on an eight-acre site, faced no public objections and has been endorsed by the Scottish Government for its role in enhancing grid resilience and supporting renewable energy integration. It will create direct and indirect jobs during construction and operation, contributing to Scotland’s targets for 50 percent renewable energy consumption and a net zero energy system by 2045.

50MW / 100MWh BESS at East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire (April 2025)

Apatura has secured planning approval for a 50MW / 100MWh grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) near East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. This marks the company’s ninth approved BESS project in 16 months, expanding its portfolio to over 1.5GW. The 5.5-acre site, chosen for its proximity to the East Kilbride Substation, will include 16 battery containers and supporting infrastructure. Designed to store and discharge renewable energy, the project will operate for 40 years before the land is restored.

These projects form part of Scotland’s largest BESS development pipeline and are vital to the UK’s strategy for energy independence and decarbonisation. Scottish ministers have described Apatura’s projects as “essential infrastructure,” underscoring their role in ensuring secure and reliable energy supplies during the ongoing transition.

Apatura’s ongoing work is also supported by top-tier industry partners and a talented, diverse team, with operations led from headquarters in York and a key presence in Edinburgh. The company’s focus spans not only energy storage but also the broader clean energy infrastructure required to power both the renewable transition and data centre growth across the UK.
