Sacramento region clean tech firms generate $1.5 billion revenue

By Greentech Lead Team: Clean tech
manufacturing and design companies in Sacramento area have generated more than
$1.5 billion in revenue in 2011, up 131 percent from combined  revenue of
$650 million in 2008.

Regional employment with clean tech
manufacturing and design companies grew to more than 2,200 jobs compared to
1,800 jobs three years ago. The total number of area clean tech companies
totals 96 compared to 106 a year ago, according to a report released by
Sacramento Area Regional Technology Alliance (SARTA).

“It’s clear that our focus on
growing the clean tech segment of our regional economy is paying off and we
expect to see continued revenue and employment growth moving forward,” said
SARTA CEO Meg Arnold.

Sacramento region’s clean economy
growth is outpacing clean economy growth in the U.S. overall. Sacramento ranks
12th out of 100 metropolitan regions in the total number of clean
economy and related jobs and seventh for green job growth.

“Much of the recent growth is from
solar and energy efficiency businesses. We’ve made good progress, and have
significant opportunity for continued growth across the entire sector,” said
Gary Simon, SARTA CleanStart chair.

CleanStart, sponsored by SMUD, the
City of Sacramento, Ernst & Young, Drexel University, Sacramento State
and others, has a goal to bring 10,000 new clean-tech jobs and $5 billion in
revenue to the Sacramento region.
