America: The city of Evanston has selected Constellation Energy, a supplier
of power, natural gas and energy products and services for homes and
businesses, to supply low-cost electricity and green energy following a
competitive bidding process under the city’s electricity choice aggregation
program.
Under the agreement, Constellation will supply 100 percent
renewable energy to Evanston by purchasing renewable energy certificates (RECs)
from wind energy generated in Illinois or adjacent states. RECs represent
the environmental benefit of electricity generated by wind and therefore avoid
carbon dioxide emissions.
“We are very pleased to be selected by Evanston, a city
known as leader among Illinois municipalities for its strong city government,
high standards and rigorous reviews to ensure citizens receive the highest
quality services. We look forward to offering the citizens of Evanston both
green energy and fixed-price certainty, along with Constellation’s great
service and low rates on energy,” said Bruce Stewart, chief marketing officer
for Constellation.
Constellation Energy will work with the city to notify
all eligible Evanston customers of the electric supply rate, terms and
conditions and their right to opt-out of the program. Residential and small
commercial retail customers will have the right to opt-out of the aggregation
program without penalty and remain with ComEd-purchased electricity. City
estimates typical Evanston family can save up to $264 annually and help city
reach climate action goals.
“I am pleased that Evanston residents have directed the city
to move forward with electricity aggregation. In addition to providing cost
savings, our aggregation program is an opportunity to secure cleaner, green
power for our community and support the goals of the Evanston Climate Action
Plan to reduce our emissions by 13 percent by the end of 2012,” said Elizabeth
Tisdahl, Evanston mayor.
Electric service under the newly negotiated rates is
scheduled to begin as early as July 2012.
