CrossBoundary Starts 233 MW Solar + 526 MWh Battery Plant for Kamoa Copper in DRC
CrossBoundary Energy has brought a 233 MWp solar and 526 MWh battery energy-storage facility into commercial operation for Kamoa Copper in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The hybrid plant is designed to supply at least 30 MW of dispatchable baseload renewable power with 95 percent annual availability to the Kamoa-Kakula copper complex. The storage system is rated at approximately 123 MVA/526 MWh. Kamoa Copper is a joint venture involving Ivanhoe Mines, Zijin Mining Group and the DRC government. CrossBoundary’s partners on the development include Soventix, DHybrid, MSS and Sigma Consulting. The project was commissioned on August 12, 2026, following a PPA signed in April 2025, and demonstrates large-scale solar-plus-storage replacing thermal baseload supply for energy-intensive African mining operations.
RWE Starts Monopile Installation at 795 MW OranjeWind Offshore Wind Farm
RWE has installed the first monopile for the 795 MW OranjeWind offshore wind farm in the Dutch North Sea, marking the start of offshore foundation construction. OranjeWind is being developed around 53 km off the Dutch coast and will use 53 Vestas V236-15.0 MW turbines, each rated at 15 MW. The project is designed as more than a conventional offshore wind farm, with RWE planning to integrate wind generation with flexible demand, battery storage and other energy-system technologies to reduce pressure on the Dutch grid. Offshore construction is expected to continue through the project’s installation programme ahead of planned commissioning. The first-monopile milestone moves OranjeWind from preparatory activity into full offshore construction and represents a major step toward adding nearly 0.8 GW of renewable generation.
EnBW Starts Construction of 400 MW / 800 MWh Philippsburg Battery Project in Germany
EnBW has begun construction of a 400 MW/800 MWh battery energy storage system at the Philippsburg Energy Park in Germany, creating one of the country’s largest new grid-scale storage projects. The two-hour battery will be developed at the site of the former Philippsburg nuclear power station, reusing established high-capacity grid infrastructure. At full output, the system will be capable of delivering 400 MW while storing 800 MWh of electricity, supporting renewable-energy integration, frequency services and peak-demand management. The project illustrates the transition of former conventional power-generation sites into flexible clean-energy infrastructure. Germany’s rapid expansion of wind and solar is increasing demand for large batteries capable of absorbing surplus generation and returning electricity to the grid when renewable output falls.
