The latest renewable energy news includes announcements on Belgium Awards 1 GW Battery Storage Capacity, Battery Storage Projects in Victoria, Flower, and others.

Belgium Awards 1 GW Battery Storage Capacity in Latest Electricity Market Auctions

Belgium’s transmission system operator Elia has awarded approximately 1 GW of new battery energy storage capacity through its latest Capacity Remuneration Mechanism auctions. Results announced November 4 cover electricity capacity contracts for delivery periods extending through 2031. Total awarded capacity across the relevant auctions reached approximately 2.4 GW, including battery storage and other qualifying generation resources. The contracts provide revenue visibility to developers investing in facilities that can respond rapidly to electricity demand and supply fluctuations. Battery storage is becoming increasingly important as Belgium expands renewable electricity generation and manages periods of high wind and solar output. Individual project commissioning schedules depend on contractual obligations and construction progress.

Victoria Approves Four Battery Storage Projects with Combined Capacity of 1,335 MW

The Australian state of Victoria has approved four utility-scale battery energy storage projects with combined discharge capacity of approximately 1,335 MW. The approvals were confirmed November 4, following decisions issued ahead of the state election caretaker period. The portfolio includes European Energy’s 600 MW Gippsland battery, Potentia Energy’s 200 MW/800 MWh Tragowell project, and the Cobden and Camperdown battery developments proposed by Australian Renewable Energy Services. Gippsland could provide between 1,200 MWh and 2,400 MWh of storage, depending on the final configuration. The approvals advance Victoria’s electricity storage pipeline as the state prepares for the retirement of the 1.48 GW Yallourn coal-fired power station in 2028. Construction remains subject to investment decisions.

Flower Begins Trading 30 MW/30 MWh Battery Storage Facility in Finland

Swedish energy technology company Flower has launched full-scale commercial operations at a 30 MW/30 MWh battery energy storage facility in Kaunola, Finland. Announced November 4, the installation is now participating in Finland’s wholesale electricity and ancillary services markets. The battery can provide rapid electricity discharge and charging services to support system balancing and frequency management. Commercial operation represents a new milestone following the project’s construction and commissioning activities. The facility strengthens Flower’s presence in the Nordic electricity market, where increasing wind generation creates demand for flexible resources. The company will use its electricity trading and optimisation capabilities to manage the battery’s participation in multiple markets. Investment value was not disclosed.
