Renewable energy news: TenneT, GE Vernova, Centrus

GE Vernova’s 2.7 MW -132 wind turbine generators

GE Vernova’s 2.7 MW -132 wind turbine generators

Today’s renewable energy news includes announcements from TenneT, GE Vernova, Centrus, among others.

TenneT Moves Transformers to Maasvlakte Station

TenneT has transported the first three large transformers to its 2 GW converter station at Maasvlakte in Rotterdam, supporting offshore wind grid integration. Each transformer weighs up to 400 tonnes and forms a critical part of infrastructure connecting North Sea wind farms to the Dutch grid.  The project highlights innovation in high-voltage transmission, converting offshore-generated electricity into usable power for the national grid. This customer-focused infrastructure improves energy reliability and enables efficient delivery of renewable power to industrial users. The development reflects significant investment in grid expansion, essential for handling increasing offshore wind capacity. By strengthening transmission capabilities, TenneT supports the Netherlands’ transition to a more resilient and sustainable energy system.

Judge Blocks GE Exit from Vineyard Wind Project

A US judge has blocked GE Vernova from exiting its turbine supply and service agreement for the Vineyard Wind offshore project, ensuring continuity at a critical stage of development. The court issued a preliminary injunction preventing GE from terminating the contract, citing the risk of major delays and financial disruption if the company withdrew.  The dispute centres on unpaid dues of over $300 million claimed by GE, while developers argue payments were withheld due to performance issues and earlier turbine failures.  This ruling highlights the importance of reliability and accountability in large-scale renewable projects. The decision protects customer interests by ensuring project stability, while reflecting significant investment and the need for strong execution in offshore wind development.

Centrus Selects Contractor for Uranium Plant Expansion

Centrus Energy has selected Geiger Brothers as the construction contractor for a major expansion of its uranium enrichment facility in Ohio. The project supports increased production of low-enriched uranium (LEU) and high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU), which are critical for existing and next-generation nuclear reactors. This initiative highlights innovation in nuclear fuel infrastructure, strengthening domestic supply chains and reducing reliance on imports. The customer-focused approach ensures reliable, carbon-free energy supply for utilities and advanced reactor developers. The expansion forms part of a multi-billion-dollar investment to scale enrichment capacity and meet rising energy demand. It also reinforces the role of nuclear energy in supporting long-term energy security and the transition to low-emission power systems.
