Renewable energy news: Skyborn, Wien Energie, Nordex

GWEC report on wind energy security

Today’s renewable energy news includes updates on Skyborn, Wien Energie, Nordex, among others.

Skyborn Sells 25% Stake in Gennaker Offshore Wind Farm

Skyborn Renewables has agreed to sell a 25 percent equity stake in the 976.5-MW Gennaker offshore wind farm to German municipal utility Stadtwerke München (SWM). The transaction brings a major strategic investor into what is set to become the largest offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea and supports the project’s progress toward construction and operation.  Located around 15 kilometres off the coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Gennaker will feature 63 offshore wind turbines with a total capacity of 976.5 MW. Once operational, the wind farm is expected to generate enough clean electricity to supply approximately one million households and make a significant contribution to Germany’s offshore wind expansion targets. Construction is expected to advance following financial close, with full commissioning planned for 2028. Gennaker is expected to enhance energy security, accelerate renewable energy deployment, reduce carbon emissions, and support Germany’s long-term decarbonization and energy transition goals.

Wien Energie Commissions 62-MW Loidesthal II Wind Farm

Austrian utility Wien Energie has officially commissioned the 62-MW Loidesthal II wind farm in Lower Austria, marking a significant milestone in the company’s renewable energy expansion strategy. The project is part of Wien Energie’s growing partnership with renewable energy developer ImWind and strengthens Austria’s onshore wind generation capacity. The wind farm is expected to generate enough clean electricity to supply tens of thousands of households while reducing carbon emissions.  Loidesthal II plays a key role in Wien Energie’s plan to significantly expand its renewable energy portfolio. Together with other projects under development, including the Ebreichsdorf wind farm, the company expects to double its wind power capacity to 520 MW in 2026. The project also contributes to the broader goal of reaching 1 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2026 and 1.8 GW by 2030 through the combined portfolios of Wien Energie and ImWind. The project reinforces Wien Energie’s ambition to expand its renewable portfolio to 2.8 GW by 2040, helping meet long-term decarbonization targets while supporting the electrification of households and transportation across Austria.

Nordex Secures 484 MW of Wind Turbine Orders in the United States

German wind turbine manufacturer Nordex Group has secured new orders totaling 484 MW for multiple wind energy projects in the United States, further strengthening its presence in one of the world’s largest renewable energy markets. The contracts include the supply and installation of Nordex’s latest-generation turbines, along with long-term service and maintenance agreements to ensure optimal project performance. The projects will utilize turbines from Nordex’s Delta4000 platform, known for high efficiency, improved energy yields, and suitability for a wide range of wind conditions. The orders demonstrate continued demand for advanced wind technology as developers seek to maximize renewable energy generation and project economics.Once operational, the wind farms are expected to generate substantial amounts of clean electricity, helping utilities and corporate customers meet sustainability targets while reducing reliance on fossil fuel-based power generation. The projects will also contribute to local economic development through construction activity, employment opportunities, and investment in energy infrastructure. For Nordex, the 484-MW order intake strengthens its North American project pipeline and reinforces its position in the competitive US wind market.
