RWE Installs First Turbine at Nordseecluster A Offshore Wind Farm
RWE has installed the first wind turbine at its 660-MW Nordseecluster A offshore wind project in the German North Sea, marking a major construction milestone for one of Germany’s largest renewable energy developments. The project’s first phase, Nordseecluster A, will comprise 44 Vestas V236-15.0 MW turbines and is scheduled to enter full commercial operation in early 2027. Located approximately 50 km north of the island of Juist, Nordseecluster is being developed in two phases with a total planned capacity of around 1.6 GW. Once fully completed, the project is expected to generate enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of 1.6 million German households. RWE holds a 51 percent stake in the development, while Norges Bank Investment Management owns the remaining 49 percent. The installation highlights continued progress on Germany’s offshore wind expansion strategy. Following the completion of foundation and substation works, turbine installation is now underway, with Nordseecluster B set to add a further 900 MW and begin commercial operations in 2029.
TotalEnergies in Talks to Return 1.5-GW German Offshore Wind Licence
French energy major TotalEnergies is in discussions with German authorities regarding the potential return of a 1.5-GW offshore wind development licence in the North Sea. The licence was awarded in 2023 during Germany’s offshore wind auction process, where developers were required to make substantial payments without receiving direct government support. According to the company, ongoing negotiations are focused on determining the conditions under which the permit could be relinquished. The move reflects growing challenges facing Europe’s offshore wind sector, including rising project costs, supply-chain constraints, higher interest rates, and increasing pressure on project economics. Industry participants have raised concerns that some auction frameworks may place excessive financial burdens on developers, potentially affecting project viability. If TotalEnergies proceeds with the licence return, it would represent one of the most significant reassessments of a German offshore wind award to date. The outcome of the discussions could influence future offshore wind auction designs in Germany as policymakers seek to balance ambitious renewable energy targets with investor confidence and project profitability.
RWE and Meta Sign Long-Term PPA for Texas Solar Project
RWE and Meta have signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) for the entire output of RWE’s 200-MWac Waterloo Solar project in Bastrop County, Texas. Under the agreement, Meta will purchase 100 percent of the renewable electricity generated by the solar facility to support its expanding regional operations and growing data centre capacity in Texas. The project is expected to begin construction in late 2025 and will contribute to Meta’s commitment to match its operations with 100 percent renewable energy. The deal marks the third recent renewable energy agreement between RWE and Meta, bringing the total contracted capacity between the two companies to 574 MW across projects in Texas, Illinois, and Louisiana. Previous agreements covered RWE’s County Run Solar project in Illinois and Lafitte Solar project in Louisiana. The partnership highlights the growing demand for clean energy from technology companies as they expand data centre infrastructure and AI-driven operations. For RWE, the agreement supports continued investment in U.S. renewable energy projects, while helping meet rising electricity demand and advancing corporate decarbonization goals.
