Today’s renewable energy news includes updates from Orsted, PGE, TKF, BayWa r.e., among others.
Orsted and PGE Begin Offshore Construction on 1.5GW Baltica 2 Wind Farm
Orsted and PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna have started offshore construction of the 1.5GW Baltica 2 offshore wind farm in the Polish Baltic Sea. The first monopile foundations have now been installed at the project site located around 40 kilometres off the coast near Ustka. The project will include 107 Siemens Gamesa 14MW turbines and is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to power approximately 2.5 million Polish households. Installation contractor Van Oord will install 111 monopiles, including foundations for turbines and offshore substations, with construction continuing through late 2026. Turbine installation will be carried out by Cadeler and Fred. Olsen Windcarrier. Baltica 2 is scheduled for full commissioning in 2027 under a 25-year inflation-protected contract for difference with the Polish government. The development highlights major investment and innovation in offshore wind infrastructure, strengthening Poland’s energy security, reducing fossil fuel dependence, and supporting long-term industrial growth and decarbonisation across Europe.
TKF Wins Cable Contract for Zeevonk Offshore Wind Project
TKF has secured the inter-array cable contract for phase one of the Zeevonk offshore wind project from Vattenfall and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. The agreement covers the supply of approximately 162 kilometres of 66kV inter-array cables. TKF will handle the design, engineering, manufacturing, testing and project management of the cable systems from its Eemshaven facility in the Netherlands. The project incorporates circular and low-carbon materials, including low-emission aluminium, recycled steel, recycled copper and bitumen-free cable designs to reduce environmental impact. The contract highlights continued investment and innovation in sustainable offshore wind infrastructure, supporting lower-carbon supply chains and circular manufacturing practices. The Zeevonk project is expected to contribute to North Sea renewable energy expansion while strengthening grid connectivity and long-term energy security in Europe.
BayWa r.e Selected to Operate 137MW German Battery Storage Project
BayWa r.e. has signed an eight-year operations contract with Denmark’s Scale Fund for the 137MW/282MWh Alfeld battery energy storage system currently under construction in Lower Saxony, Germany. The project is expected to enter commercial operation in the third quarter of 2026. The Alfeld battery facility will primarily provide ancillary grid services, including primary control reserve, helping improve grid stability and security of electricity supply as renewable penetration increases across Germany. BayWa r.e. said the agreement marks one of its first standalone third-party battery assets under management, expanding beyond storage systems integrated into hybrid renewable projects. The development highlights continued investment and innovation in large-scale battery infrastructure and energy management services. Scale Fund noted the battery park will form part of Germany’s critical energy infrastructure and support the integration of growing volumes of wind and solar generation into the national grid.
