German Industry Groups Urge Fresh Offshore Wind Auctions to Safeguard Supply Chain Growth

Leading German trade associations and labour unions have called on the federal government to launch new offshore wind auction rounds, warning that a lack of future project allocations could threaten investment, jobs, and supply chain development in the country’s rapidly expanding offshore wind sector. The appeal was made during the Global Offshore Wind 2026 conference, where industry stakeholders stressed the need for long-term market visibility and a stable project pipeline.  The groups argue that additional auction volumes are essential to maintain momentum toward Germany’s target of 70 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2045. Without new leasing opportunities, manufacturers, port operators, vessel owners, and component suppliers could face reduced investment confidence, potentially impacting thousands of jobs across the offshore wind value chain.  Industry representatives also highlighted concerns over increasing turbine sizes, supply chain constraints, and the need for timely grid expansion to support future offshore developments. They emphasized that regular auction schedules would provide certainty for investors and developers while ensuring Germany remains a global leader in offshore wind energy. The proposal supports broader goals of accelerating renewable energy deployment, strengthening energy security, reducing carbon emissions, and advancing Europe’s long-term energy transition objectives.

Amazon Signs 600-MW Power Purchase Agreement from Germany’s Gennaker Offshore Wind Farm

Amazon has signed a 600-MW power purchase agreement (PPA) with offshore wind developer Skyborn Renewables for electricity from the 976-MW Gennaker offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea. The agreement is one of the largest corporate renewable energy deals in Germany and will support Amazon’s efforts to power its operations with clean energy while advancing its commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions.  The Gennaker project is set to become Germany’s largest offshore wind farm upon completion, with the capacity to generate renewable electricity for hundreds of thousands of households. The long-term PPA provides revenue certainty for the project while helping accelerate investment in large-scale offshore wind infrastructure.  The agreement highlights growing demand from major technology companies for renewable energy to power data centres, logistics networks, and digital infrastructure. For Germany, the project supports offshore wind expansion, strengthens energy security, reduces carbon emissions, and contributes to national and European decarbonization targets. The deal also reinforces the critical role of corporate PPAs in financing renewable energy projects and accelerating the transition to a cleaner and more resilient energy system.

Pattern Energy Completes 3.6-GW SunZia Wind Project Pattern Energy has announced the completion of the 3.65-GW SunZia Wind and Transmission Project, the largest clean energy infrastructure project in US history. The USD 11 billion project combines a large-scale wind farm in New Mexico with a 550-mile high-voltage transmission line that delivers renewable electricity to Arizona and California. SunZia is capable of supplying clean power to approximately one million homes and includes more than 3,650 MW of wind generation capacity. The project is expected to generate around USD 20.5 billion in economic benefits over its lifetime and create more than 2,000 construction jobs during development. The project significantly strengthens grid reliability and enables the delivery of large volumes of renewable energy across the Western United States. SunZia represents a major milestone in the country’s clean energy transition, supporting renewable energy integration, reducing carbon emissions, enhancing energy security, and helping meet long-term decarbonization goals. The development also highlights the importance of transmission infrastructure in unlocking the full potential of renewable energy resources.
