Today’s renewable energy news includes announcements from Energy Vault, KEPCO, ContourGlobal, among others.
Energy Vault to Supply Battery Storage for 1.25 GW Texas AI Data Centre Project
Energy Vault Holdings Inc. has signed a strategic commercial agreement to supply battery energy storage systems (BESS), grid-forming power conversion systems (PCS) and AI infrastructure control software for an initial 1.25 GW integrated power infrastructure deployment supporting hyperscaler AI data centres in Texas. The platform combines battery storage, grid-forming technology, dispatchable generation and intelligent controls to provide reliable power while reducing dependence on lengthy grid interconnection processes. The initial deployment is backed by a hyperscaler customer contract, with systems expected to be deployed over the next four to 12 months. Energy Vault expects the agreement to generate approximately USD 500 million–USD 600 million in revenue during the second half of 2026 and 2027. Robert Piconi, Chairman and CEO of Energy Vault, said the agreement represents a major expansion of the company’s role in delivering scalable power infrastructure for rapidly growing AI and data-centre demand.
KEPCO Fund Invests in 39 MW/81 MWh Energy Storage Facility in Aichi
A fund operated by Kansai Electric Power (KEPCO), Kinden. and MUFG Sustainable Energy has selected its first investment: a 39 MW/81 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The project is expected to begin commercial operations in April 2028 and will participate in Japan’s electricity markets, supporting grid balancing and renewable energy integration. The fund was established on March 31, 2026, with JPY 6.5 billion raised from 10 participating companies to invest in extra-high-voltage battery storage projects. The Aichi facility represents an important step in KEPCO’s strategy to expand its energy-storage business and contribute to Japan’s increasingly flexible, renewable-powered electricity system.
ContourGlobal Orders 3 GWh of CATL Batteries for Multi-Country Projects
ContourGlobal, the KKR-backed independent power producer, has signed an agreement with Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) to secure 3 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) for projects across multiple countries. The agreement will support ContourGlobal’s growing portfolio of large-scale energy storage developments in Europe and the Americas, strengthening its strategy to deploy long-duration batteries alongside renewable generation. ContourGlobal already has more than 3 GWh of BESS projects operational or under advanced construction, including major assets in Chile and Bulgaria, while additional projects are progressing in Italy, Greece, the UK and the US. Antonio Cammisecra, President and CEO of ContourGlobal, is leading the company’s global storage expansion. The CATL agreement further strengthens ContourGlobal’s ability to provide flexible, dispatchable clean power and support grid reliability as renewable energy penetration increases.
