Elevate Commissions 150-MW/600-MWh Battery Storage Project in Virginia

Elevate Renewables has brought online its 150-MW/600-MWh Prospect Power battery energy storage system (BESS) in Virginia, marking a significant milestone for grid-scale energy storage in the PJM market. Located in Rockingham County near Northern Virginia’s rapidly expanding “Data Center Alley,” the four-hour-duration facility is among the largest standalone battery storage projects in Virginia and the PJM Interconnection region.  The project is contracted under a 15-year power purchase agreement with Dominion Energy Virginia and is designed to enhance grid reliability, support renewable energy integration, and help meet growing electricity demand driven by data centers, industrial development, and electrification trends across the Mid-Atlantic region. Originally developed by Swift Current Energy and later acquired by Elevate Renewables, the facility represents a major investment in energy infrastructure aimed at providing flexible capacity and balancing services to the grid. The commissioning underscores the increasing role of large-scale battery storage in supporting energy security, decarbonization goals, and the reliable operation of modern power systems.

Sembcorp Completes Alinta Energy Acquisition, Expands Australian Portfolio by 13.8 GW

Singapore-based energy and urban solutions provider Sembcorp has completed its acquisition of Alinta Energy, marking a major expansion into the Australian energy market. The transaction adds a combined 13.8 GW of operating and development capacity to Sembcorp’s portfolio, including 3.4 GW of existing generation assets and a 10.4 GW pipeline of renewable energy and firming projects across Australia.  The acquisition significantly strengthens Sembcorp’s renewable energy growth strategy and supports its ambition to accelerate the energy transition across the Asia-Pacific region. Alinta Energy will continue operating under its existing brand and management team, ensuring business continuity for customers and stakeholders while benefiting from Sembcorp’s global renewable energy expertise.  The deal provides Sembcorp with a scalable platform in one of the world’s fastest-growing clean energy markets, positioning the company to capitalize on increasing investments in solar, wind, battery storage, and grid infrastructure. The acquisition also underscores growing international confidence in Australia’s energy transition and long-term renewable energy opportunities.

Mulilo Secures Financing for 77-MW/308-MWh Battery Storage Project in South Africa

South African independent power producer Mulilo has reached financial close for a 77-MW/308-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project, marking another milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen grid reliability and accelerate the energy transition. The four-hour-duration battery facility will provide critical energy storage capacity, helping to balance electricity supply and demand, improve grid flexibility, and support the integration of renewable energy sources.  The project forms part of South Africa’s strategy to deploy large-scale energy storage infrastructure to address power system challenges and enhance energy security. Mulilo, one of the country’s leading renewable energy developers, has rapidly expanded its battery storage portfolio and aims to bring significant renewable energy and storage capacity into operation over the coming years. The financing underscores growing investor confidence in South Africa’s energy storage market and highlights the increasing role of BESS projects in supporting decarbonization, renewable energy integration, and a more resilient electricity network. Once operational, the facility will contribute to stabilizing the grid while enabling greater deployment of clean energy resources across the country.
