Byont Acquires Two German Biogas Plants, Expanding Production Capacity to 160 GWh

Dutch renewable-gas group Byont, through Byont Deutschland, has acquired two operational biogas facilities in Wietmarschen, Lower Saxony, and Völpke, Saxony-Anhalt. The ownership transfers were completed in August 2026 and announced in October. The acquired businesses have been renamed Byont Schwartenpohl and Byont Badeleben. The acquisitions increase Byont’s German operating portfolio to four biogas facilities with approximately 160 GWh of combined annual production capacity. The Völpke facility already upgrades biogas into biomethane for injection into the gas network. Byont intends to introduce biomethane production at Wietmarschen after completing its upgrading infrastructure. Existing employees and supplier relationships will be retained. Financial consideration and individual facility production capacities were not disclosed.

NKT Wins Three High-Voltage Cable Contracts for Hamburg Electricity Grid

Danish power-cable manufacturer NKT has secured three high-voltage cable contracts from Hamburger Energienetze, the electricity distribution network operator serving Hamburg, Germany. The projects form part of the city’s Grid of the Future programme and will strengthen its 110 kV electricity network. The contracts cover the delivery of more than 50 kilometres of high-voltage XLPE power cables for three underground transmission infrastructure developments. The upgrades are designed to accommodate additional electricity demand associated with renewable-energy integration, industrial electrification, electric vehicles and heat pumps. NKT will supply cable technology for the network expansion and modernisation programme. Individual project schedules, installation partners and the total contract value were not disclosed.

South Korea Unveils KRW 1,000 Trillion Green Transformation Financing Strategy

South Korea has announced its Korea-Green Transformation Strategy, targeting approximately KRW 1,000 trillion ($744 billion) in green investment and financing through 2035. The programme includes approximately KRW 200 trillion in government funding and KRW 790 trillion in climate finance, including support from policy banks. The strategy covers renewable energy, hydrogen, industrial decarbonisation and clean manufacturing technologies. South Korea is targeting 100 GW of renewable-energy capacity by 2030. Industrial priorities include hydrogen-based steelmaking, petrochemicals, cement, semiconductors and refining. The government also plans to introduce green government bonds in 2028. The announcement establishes a national investment framework; individual project allocations and disbursement schedules will depend on subsequent implementation decisions.

Syria Opens Investor Selection Process for 1.2 GW Pumped Hydropower Storage Project

Syria has opened an expression-of-interest process for the Halabiyeh-Zalabiyeh hydropower and pumped-storage project on the Euphrates River. The proposed development combines an 81 MW conventional hydropower plant with a pumped-storage installation of up to 1,200 MW. The storage facility would provide approximately 3.5 hours of discharge, equivalent to around 4,200 MWh at maximum output, using four reversible generating units. The Ministry of Energy is seeking qualified developers, investors and engineering companies to undertake studies, financing, construction and operation. Potential delivery models include public-private partnerships and build-operate-transfer arrangements. Expressions of interest are due by November 10, 2026, with project enquiries accepted until October 26. No construction contract has been awarded.
