Burgenland Energie Starts 210 MWh Battery at Austrian Wind-Solar Hub

Burgenland Energie has broken ground on a 210 MWh battery storage system at Nickelsdorf, Austria, adding storage to an existing renewable complex containing more than 100 MW of solar and over 100 MW of wind capacity. The battery will be developed in two phases, initially around 60 MWh followed by approximately 150 MWh. Burgenland Energie estimates the system will enable utilisation of another 18 million kWh of renewable electricity annually, equivalent to consumption by roughly 5,000 households. The development forms part of the utility’s broader 700 MWh battery-storage programme. By storing excess daytime solar and wind electricity for morning and evening demand, Nickelsdorf becomes an integrated wind-solar-storage power facility.

Marinus Link Secures Australia’s First Offshore Transmission Licence for 1.5 GW Interconnector

The 1.5 GW Marinus Link electricity interconnector between Tasmania and Victoria has received Australia’s first Transmission and Infrastructure Licence under the Offshore Electricity Infrastructure Act. The licence is the project’s final Commonwealth approval leading into construction and authorises construction, operation, maintenance and eventual decommissioning of the subsea electricity cables and associated fibre-optic infrastructure. Marinus Link will connect northwest Tasmania with Victoria’s Latrobe Valley, allowing renewable electricity to move between the two power systems. Preparatory works started during 2026 and construction will now ramp up. The licence remains valid until 2090. Marinus Link Pty Ltd is jointly owned by Australia’s Commonwealth government and the governments of Tasmania and Victoria.

Qair Draws First Funds from €38 Million Financing for Chad Solar-Storage Project

Qair has received the first disbursement from a €38 million financing package supporting a hybrid solar and battery-storage project in Chad. The financing advances the project from capital structuring toward implementation, providing funding for new photovoltaic generation combined with storage infrastructure. Hybridisation is particularly valuable in electricity systems where solar generation can exceed immediate daytime requirements but evening power remains scarce. Battery storage will allow part of the project’s photovoltaic output to be shifted into periods when generation falls. The transaction is also notable for directing institutional clean-energy capital into a Sub-Saharan African electricity market where access to reliable generation remains constrained and project finance can be difficult to secure.
