Amazon Expands Electric Vehicle Fleet in India, Paving the Way for Sustainable Deliveries

Electric vehicle for Amazon

Amazon has announced a significant milestone in its efforts towards sustainable logistics by revealing that it now operates more than 6,000 electric vehicles (EVs) within its Indian delivery fleet. These environmentally friendly EVs are making deliveries across over 400 cities in the country, showcasing the company’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.

The e-commerce giant has set ambitious goals for India, aiming to deploy a total of 10,000 EVs by the year 2025. This commitment aligns with Amazon’s global sustainability agenda and underscores the company’s dedication to eco-friendly operations.

In its endeavor to transform the delivery landscape, Amazon has collaborated extensively with local original equipment manufacturers in India. This collaborative approach involves partnerships with small and medium-sized businesses, as well as startups, to foster innovative solutions in the mobility sector.

Amazon’s innovation is exemplified by its collaboration with Altigreen, a commercial EV manufacturer based in Bengaluru. The partnership has resulted in the creation of a groundbreaking three-wheeler EV with a range of 100 kilometers and a cargo capacity of 177 cubic feet. This innovative vehicle has proven its capacity to replace diesel vans within Amazon’s network, offering comparable cargo space and range.

Additionally, Amazon has collaborated with Tata Motors, customizing the Tata Ace four-wheeler EV with a range of over 120 kilometers and a cargo capacity of 210 cubic feet. These electric vehicles offer a significantly reduced total cost of ownership compared to traditional diesel vans, exemplifying Amazon’s commitment to cost-effective sustainability.

Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Customer Fulfilment, Amazon Transportation Services, Global Specialty Fulfilment, and Supply Chain at Amazon India, emphasized the company’s active engagement with various electric vehicle manufacturers in India. This collaborative approach ensures that Amazon can meet the increasing demand for its delivery services, both from the company itself and its network of delivery service partners.

Amazon’s journey towards sustainability encompasses not only electric vehicles but also extends to embracing low-carbon fuels, adopting energy-efficient innovations, and investing in renewable energy projects to minimize emissions from electricity generation.

The company’s dedication to environmental consciousness extends to its plans for decarbonizing trucking operations in middle-mile and last-mile deliveries. Amazon is piloting scalable carbon reduction technologies and collaborating with energy infrastructure and financing companies to offer bundled solutions for transporters transitioning to electric trucks.

In a rapidly evolving landscape of sustainable business practices, Amazon’s commitment to electric mobility and reduced emissions stands as a testament to its role as a leader in driving positive change within the industry.
