RWE Deploys World’s First Offshore Wind Turbine with CO₂-Reduced Steel Tower and Recyclable Blades at Thor Wind Farm

Germany-based RWE has achieved a major breakthrough in sustainable energy by installing the world’s first offshore wind turbine featuring a CO₂-reduced steel tower and fully recyclable rotor blades. The milestone project is part of the 1.1 gigawatt Thor offshore wind farm located off the west coast of Denmark, reinforcing the company’s commitment to lowering the carbon footprint of renewable energy infrastructure.

Advancing Circular Offshore Wind Technology

The innovative turbine integrates Siemens Gamesa’s GreenerTower and RecyclableBlade technologies, developed by Siemens Gamesa. These advancements are designed to significantly enhance lifecycle sustainability in offshore wind projects.

Half of the 72 turbines planned for installation at Thor will feature towers made from steel that delivers at least 63 percent lower CO₂ emissions compared to conventional steel production. This is achieved through the use of renewable-powered furnaces and recycled scrap steel, setting a new benchmark for low-carbon manufacturing in the wind sector.

In addition, 40 turbines will be equipped with a total of 120 recyclable rotor blades. These blades utilize an advanced resin system that allows composite materials to be separated and reused at end of life, addressing one of the key environmental challenges in wind energy – blade disposal.

Cutting Emissions While Scaling Renewable Energy

The combination of GreenerTower and RecyclableBlade technologies is expected to reduce overall turbine emissions by around 20 percent. This demonstrates that large-scale offshore wind deployment can align with circular economy principles without compromising safety, quality, or operational efficiency.

RWE has already deployed recyclable blades in projects such as the Kaskasi offshore wind farm in Germany and the Sofia offshore wind farm in the United Kingdom, further validating the commercial viability of these innovations.

Thor Offshore Wind Farm Progress and Capacity

Construction of the Thor offshore wind farm is progressing on schedule, with key milestones already achieved. The offshore substation and turbine foundations have been successfully installed, and the project has begun delivering electricity to the Danish grid.

Once fully operational in 2027, the wind farm will generate enough clean electricity to power more than one million Danish households. Each of the 72 turbines will have a capacity of up to 15 megawatts, making Thor one of the largest offshore wind farms in Europe.

The project is being developed as a joint venture between RWE, which holds a 51 percent stake, and Norges Bank Investment Management, which owns the remaining 49 percent. RWE is responsible for construction and long-term operations.

Local Economic Impact and Job Creation

Thor is also expected to deliver regional economic benefits. A newly opened RWE service facility at the Port of Thorsminde will support operations and maintenance activities, creating between 50 and 60 local jobs and strengthening Denmark’s offshore wind ecosystem.

RWE Expands Global Offshore Wind Leadership

RWE continues to strengthen its position as a leading global offshore wind developer, with 18 operational offshore wind farms worldwide. These include projects such as Rødsand 2 in Denmark.

In addition to Thor, RWE is currently developing several large-scale offshore wind projects across Europe, including the Sofia offshore wind farm in the UK, the Nordseecluster off the German coast, and the OranjeWind project in the Netherlands.
