RWE announced the construction of the 1.4 GW Sofia offshore wind farm, located on the Dogger Bank off the UK east coast.
Major achievements have been made in foundation construction, as well as onshore and offshore electrical systems, with the first turbine installation expected in the coming weeks and initial power generation scheduled for later this year.
The Sofia project highlights RWE’s expertise and its ability to execute large-scale offshore wind developments on time and within budget. Through partnerships with Siemens Gamesa, the company is reinforcing its role in supporting the UK Government’s Clean Power targets for 2030. The collaboration with Siemens Gamesa in Hull is contributing to job creation and economic growth in coastal communities, demonstrating offshore wind’s economic benefits.
RWE has also prioritized technological and lifecycle sustainability innovations. The introduction of recyclable wind turbine blades at Sofia, produced by Siemens Gamesa in Hull, represents a significant step toward circular economy practices in the offshore wind industry. These recyclable blades use advanced resin systems that allow for efficient material separation and reuse, reducing waste and setting a new industry benchmark. The deployment of this technology aligns with RWE’s broader sustainability goals and reinforces the company’s leadership in driving environmentally responsible advancements in renewable energy.
Innovation extends beyond turbine technology to vessel deployment. The Cadeler-built Wind Peak, one of the largest and most advanced turbine installation vessels in the industry, is playing a crucial role in accelerating offshore wind farm installations. With a payload of over 17,600 tons and the capacity to transport and install up to seven complete turbine sets per load, this vessel enhances efficiency, reduces installation time, and minimizes overall carbon emissions associated with project construction.
RWE’s offshore wind portfolio continues to expand, with 10 operational offshore wind farms in the UK and nine additional projects under development. These new projects represent a combined potential installed capacity of approximately 9.8 GW, with RWE’s share totaling 7 GW. The company’s strategic investments in offshore wind infrastructure, technology innovation, and sustainability initiatives position it as a leader in the transition to renewable energy while ensuring long-term economic and environmental benefits.
