The wind turbines have reached their efficiency limit and now the amount spend on it should be utilized somewhere else, according to Benny Peiser, director, Global Warming Policy Forum.
The UK authorities should not believe that turbines will play a major part in reducing carbon footprint and help in reducing the impact of climate change.
Alternative energy is a favorable segment and investing in technologies with less future is not recommended. Wind energy has reached a saturation point and now solar has a brighter future, commented Peiser.
However, Bob Ward, Policy and Communications Directory at The Grantham Research Institute, asked the Government to continue spending amount in new cleaner means of fuel, like wind farms.
Climate change could not be explained by natural phenomena alone. Mankind had clearly played a part and a re-thinking is needed the way the planet is fueled. It’s far better to invest in modern, clean form of energy than continuing burning all these old, polluting fossil fuels, argued Ward.
Both pair has agreed that even if the UK changes energy policies, China and India burn massive amounts of dirty fuel and need to change.
China was building one new coal-powered plant per week and only ten per cent of its energy needs by 2030 would be met by a renewable source.
China did take the situation very seriously because poorer countries are more at risk from the adverse effects of global warming. It was easier to put solar power in villages than to build large plants, admitted Ward.
Tackling climate change is a tricky problem, because no-one really knows when the earth’s temperature will rise again and what the climate was like thousands of years ago. No one is sure if climate change in the next 50 or 100 years will be a big problem, a moderate problem or a small problem, admits Peiser.
The debate on global warming comes just weeks after thousands of people gathered around the world to protest against climate change at the People’s Climate March.
Moreover, it coincides with the start of the UN Climate Change Summit where US President Barack Obama declared it as a concern that will define the contours of this century more dramatically than any other.
