Moving ahead in its bid to go green, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has decided to put up 200 solar powered street lights inside its campus, the university’s Vice-Chancellor (VC) announced on Tuesday.
“Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has agreed to sanction 200 solar street lights to be installed in JNU. Thanks to Shri Upendra Tripathy,” VC, JNU, M. Jagadesh said in a tweet.
The solar street lights initiative has received aid from the MNRE and is in step with JNU’s stated desire to cut down on its carbon emission.
“We have funded 30 per cent of the project and the rest is done by the university,” G Prasad, a scientist at MNRE told IANS.
“We have also helped other universities as well in installing solar propelled units, for example IIM- Shillong, and NIT-Agartala. In case of these universities we had covered 90 per cent of the costs involved,” Prasad added.
