Greentech Lead America: REC Solar, a solar electric
installer and IKEA, a home furnishings retailer, have commissioned an 813-kW
solar energy system at IKEA store in Houston, Texas.
The roof top system is expected to generate 1,152,464 kWh
of clean electricity annually, the equivalent of reducing 795 tons of carbon
dioxide (CO2), eliminating the emissions of 156 cars or powering 99 homes
yearly.
IKEA Houston’s system when combined with IKEA projects
atop stores in Frisco and Round Rock will make IKEA the state’s largest solar
owner. The Houston installation is the 19th completed solar energy project for
IKEA in the United States.
This investment by IKEA reinforces the company’s
long-term commitment to sustainability and confidence in photovoltaic
technology. IKEA owns and operates each of its solar PV energy systems atop its
buildings.
IKEA has plans to install solar power systems at 20
more locations, making the eventual U.S. solar presence of IKEA nearly 89
percent with a total generation of 38 MW.
“At IKEA Houston, we constantly look for ways to
practice and encourage eco-conscious behavior within the store and throughout
the community. The new solar panels are an obvious step in the right direction
and we are thrilled about the installation. We appreciate the continued support
of the City of Houston, CenterPoint Energy, and REC Solar, our partners in this
project,” said Kim Castillo, marketing responsible for IKEA Houston.
REC Solar powers IKEA solar energy system at Orlando Store
IKEA recently commissioned a solar energy system
installed atop its store in Orlando, Florida. This installation represents the
18th completed solar energy project for IKEA in the United States. The system
will provide clean energy for the store.
